Hello, fans of great music. Today is Tuesday, so here’s a new playlist featuring three songs I personally selected from one of the most fascinating rock bands I’ve ever heard. A band that took the genre to new heights with their excellent productions and their game-changing albums. But before I go on about this amazing band, I’d like to remind you that this special music section is brought to you thanks to the weekly contest hosted by our colleague 
The band I’ll be talking about next is none other than Muse, an English band formed in 1994 that rose to fame in the early 2000s thanks to their experimental sound, blending Rock with Pop, Electronic, and classical music. Their alternative sound transcended and evolved to such an extent that it’s still being listened to today, though in a very different way than in their early days. Muse is one of those bands I only got to know through the occasional single I heard as a teenager—and I’ll be sharing those with you now.

We can confirm this through the visual style and the sound we hear in this and many of their other songs, where they draw on various electronic and classical elements to create a distinctive sound. “Starlight” is no exception—at least as far as sound is concerned—especially given the way it opens with a distorted electric guitar and piano in the background.
The lyrics of “Starlight” tell the story of a journey undertaken by the protagonist, a journey that resembles that of an astronaut in search of a “shining star.” Despite its space-themed symbolism, if we pay close attention to the lyrics, we can see that it’s about an almost impossible love—a person who is regarded as a “starlight” because of the way she illuminates the protagonist’s life. The lyrics also describe a journey where he will distance himself from his loved ones, and where his hopes and expectations are like “black holes and revelations” for both him and all of us.

La letra de Starlight nos habla de un viaje que tiene nuestro protagonista, un viaje que simula ser como el de un astronauta en busca de una “estrella luminosa”. We continue with another great single that has also managed to stand the test of time and survive shifts in genres and trends thanks to its unbeatable and unmistakable sound. What’s more, even today you can hear this song on social media as if it were one of those recently released tracks. We’re talking about “Supermassive Black Hole,” the first single from Muse’s well-known fourth album, Black Holes and Revelations (2006). The song is known for its alternative, danceable rhythm and sound that has captivated an entire generation.
The lyrics of “Supermassive Black Hole” tell the story of a self-destructive relationship compared to a supermassive black hole. The song describes the narrator’s partner as “the queen of the superficial,” causing him to “catch fire” as if “glaciers were melting” or as if “the superstar” were being absorbed by something “supermassive.” Yes, the song also contains various symbols that depict a romantic relationship that relies heavily on the physical and the chemistry between two people, rather than on the emotional and personal.
I think we’ve all had a partner who fits this song’s description perfectly. Every time we saw her or were near her, we felt as if “a force majeure” were pulling us into her “orbit” and completely engulfing us, as if she were a supermassive black hole. We wrap up this excellent list with a slightly more modern single, from around the last decade—which is when I first discovered this fantastic alternative rock band. It’s a single I heard both on MTV and elsewhere, and I was completely hooked right away because of its sound and unmistakable rhythm. I’m not very fluent in English, but even I can understand some of the lyrics. “Mercy” is the second single from Muse’s seventh studio album, Drones (2015). This song features an interesting blend of rock with alternative and electronic sounds.
“Mercy” tells the story of a person who confesses: “Help me, I’ve fallen on the inside.” This may represent a symbolic “fall” experienced by the narrator due to the oppression and negative influence exerted by higher external entities. We can learn a little about these entities from the following lines: “Men in cloaks always seem to run the show, save me from the ghosts and shadows before they eat my soul.” These “men in cloaks”—not ghosts—mentioned in the song could refer to anything that lacks a face or a physical body as such.
Certain interpretations of this song point to a critique of society and how organizations or entities that control all forms of media manipulate us through mind control and various methods of “suggestion” to turn us into puppets or automatons. Finalizamos esta excelente lista con un sencillo un poco más moderno, más o menos de la década pasada que fue cuando llegué a conocer a esta fantástica banda de Rock Alternativo. Un sencillo que llegué a escuchar tanto en MTV como en otros sitios y que de una me enganché por completo debido a su sonido y su ritmo inconfundible. No soy muy conocedor del inglés, pero incluso yo mismo puedo entender algunas cosas. Mercy es el segundo sencillo del séptimo álbum de estudio de Muse llamado Drones (2015). Esta canción posee una mezcla interesante de Rock con sonidos alternativos y electrónicos.
Mercy nos habla de la vida de una persona que confiesa lo siguiente: “Help me, I've fallen on the inside”. Es una canción fascinante, no solo por su letra, sino también por su fascinante composición musical.
