Hello, fans of great music. Today is Tuesday, which means it’s time to bring you three songs I’ve personally selected from a vast repertoire of songs, both old and new. This time, we’re sticking with the alternative rock genre, but we’re going to mix things up a bit with the following band, which has been a part of my pre-teen years, adolescence, and young adulthood. Before we continue, I’d like to remind you that this special section is brought to you thanks to the weekly Music community contest created by ablaze@ablaze and known as Three Tunes Tuesday.

The band I’ll be talking about today is none other than Coldplay, a British Alternative Rock and Pop band formed in 1997 that rose to fame in the early 2000s. The band is currently known for influencing an entire generation with songs that are so melancholic and full of emotion. Their blend of Rock, Pop, Ballads, Electronic, and Blues meant that every album offered a variety of sounds and rhythms unlike any other. The way this band has evolved over the decades is fascinating, but we’re here to talk about their early singles.

Yellow - Coldplay

One of the first songs—if not the very first—by Coldplay that I ever heard when I was just a preteen. A song that has been in my mind and in my heart for over a decade and that, when I listen to it now, brings back so many memories that it’s hard not to feel a little melancholy. “Yellow” is the second single from the British band’s debut studio album, Parachutes (2000). Its slow tempo and heavy sound perfectly captured the essence of Coldplay in their early years as a band, sounding more alternative than they do now.

The lyrics of “Yellow” are open to a variety of interpretations and meanings, each depending on one’s perspective. It can serve as a love dedication, a song about the “beautiful things” in life, and so on. I prefer the first interpretation—a dedication to that special person who has lit up your life just as the stars in a clear sky illuminate a dark night. The word “yellow” has no specific meaning in and of itself and is repeated constantly throughout the song. Although the band neither confirms nor denies anything, the song gives meaning to this word through what it tries to convey to us from beginning to end.

The song isn’t just about a man’s feelings for the girl who makes him so happy that he tells her, “your skin and your bones have become something beautiful.” The song also conveys a deeper, stronger, and more unconditional sense of companionship and loyalty, as evidenced by lines like “for you, I’d bleed myself dry.” Another frequently repeated phrase is “look how they shine for you,” which clearly illustrates the protagonist’s courage and appreciation for that special person.

We’re continuing with another beautiful Coldplay song that’s also one of their earliest and most famous singles from the start of the new millennium. This time, I want to talk about a song that, personally, conveys much more negative and depressing feelings to me than the previous one, which serves as a perfect contrast between the two. “Trouble” is the third single from the band’s well-known debut album, Parachutes (2000). The song also features a slow tempo and a piano arrangement with guitar and drums that’s absolutely perfect for the melancholic, hard vibe it conveys.

“Trouble” is a high-quality Rock Ballad with a message that’s both interesting and moving for those of us who’ve been listening to it for over a decade. The lyrics speak of the regret and lament of a man who finds himself trapped in a “spiderweb” that tightens every time he tries to move. This spiderweb can be described as “the thoughts of all the nonsense” this person has said. The song’s lyrics—which aren’t as long or complex as they seem—include a part where the protagonist confesses, “I never meant to cause you trouble, and I, I never meant to do you wrong.”

This can be interpreted as a confession from someone who has caused their partner a lot of trouble throughout their relationship. Whether through things they said or did, this character has caused many “troubles” in the life of that special partner, and that’s why they now find themselves trapped in a “spiderweb” of thoughts and regrets. I don’t know why, ever since I was a teenager, I’ve felt such a deep connection to this song, even though I didn’t know what the lyrics were about. Now that I do know, I can’t help but notice the irony and how I relate to everything this song says and conveys.

I never meant to cause you trouble, and I, I never meant to do you wrong”.

Paradise - Coldplay

To end this song on the best possible note and counteract all those negative thoughts left over from the previous song, what better way to do so than with one of the best songs Coldplay has ever made. It’s a song that, once I heard it as a teenager, I’ve never been able to forget for the rest of my life. “Paradise” is the second single from the band’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto (2011). The song features a mix of genres and rhythms, and its composition remains quite fascinating to this day.

The lyrics of “Paradise” tell the story of a dream—a little girl who had high hopes for life and constantly dreamed of seeing her own “paradise.” However, reality itself prevents her from seeing that paradise on earth, which is filled with sorrow and horrors for a little girl. Nevertheless, despite the difficulties and the harsh reality she witnesses with her own eyes every day, she always lies down at night and closes her eyes to “travel” to that “paradise” she had so long dreamed of experiencing. This can be a source of motivation for her—and for all of us.

Motivation to keep moving forward despite the harsh reality we all face. A paradise is what we all dream of experiencing at some point in our lives, and while it may sometimes seem impossible to achieve in reality, these dreams and hopes are what motivate us to keep going and never give up, just like that little girl who hoped to see paradise in this song. As the saying goes, “hope is the last thing to be lost,” and that is exactly what this beautiful song tries to convey from start to finish: paradise awaits us, so let’s not lose hope.
