This time, I’m sticking pretty close to Grunge and Alternative Rock with the band I’ve decided to feature below. The rock band I’m going to tell you about this week is none other than 3 Doors Down, an American band formed in the mid-90s. This band is known for its particularly slow yet heavy sound that blends Post-Grunge with Hard Rock and Alternative Rock. 3 Doors Down rose to popularity in the early 2000s following the release of their first studio album. However, I first discovered them between 2010 and 2012 during my exploration of the rock genre.

La banda de rock que toca hablarles esta semana es nada más ni nada menos que 3 Doors Down, una banda estadounidense formada a mediados de los años 90. Esta banda es conocida por su sonido particularmente lento y a la vez pesado que mezcla el Post-Grunge con el Hard Rock y el Rock Alternativo. 3 Doors Down se popularizó a principios de los años 2000 luego del lanzamiento de su primer álbum de estudio. Let's start with the song that made me recognize them among the huge number of rock bands I listened to when I was just a teenager. Interestingly, it’s the song that has garnered the most popularity and streams since its release in the early 2000s. “When I’m Gone” is the first single from 3 Doors Down’s second studio album, Away From the Sun (2002). This song has a slow tempo that suddenly shifts from soft to intense due to its Post-Grunge influence.
“When I’m Gone” is a plea for love and understanding from the singer to his partner. It also serves as a sort of confession from the narrator, who tells us from the start that he is a person with secrets, with “a completely different world inside” him, and with a darkness within that makes it impossible for him to find any light. All of this makes his subsequent plea, which we hear in the chorus, more of a cry for help than anything else.
The chorus goes as follows: “So hold me when I’m here, right me when I’m wrong, hold me when I’m scared and love me when I’m gone, everything I am and everything in me, wants to be the one you wanted me to be.” From this, we can clearly conclude what our protagonist is seeking through these lyrics. Empezamos con la canción que me hizo identificarlos de entre la enorme cantidad de bandas de Rock que llegué a escuchar cuando apenas era un adolescente. Curiosamente es la canción que más popularidad y reproducciones tiene desde su lanzamiento a principios de los años 2000. When I'm Gone es el primer sencillo del segundo álbum de estudio de 3 Doors Down titulado Away From the Sun (2002). Esta canción posee un ritmo lento que de repente pasa de ser suave a fuerte por su influencia Post-Grunge.
When I'm Gone habla de una especie de petición de amor y comprensión por parte del cantante hacia su pareja. También sirve como una especie de confesión por parte del narrador quien nos cuenta desde el principio que es una persona con secretos, con “un mundo completamente diferente dentro” de él y con una oscuridad en su interior que le hace imposible encontrar algo de luz. Todo esto hace que su petición posterior que escuchamos en el coro sea más un llamado de auxilio que cualquier otra cosa.

Interestingly, the next song is from the same album as the previous one, and I’ve also listened to it a lot along with the others on this short list ever since I was just a teenager. It’s a slow, gentle, calm, and rather melancholic song—like most 3 Doors Down songs, to be honest. “Away From The Sun” is the fourth single from their second studio album of the same name, which was released in 2004. What made it popular was both its rhythm and its lyrics, which went on to influence an entire generation.
“Away From The Sun” is about a state of isolation, melancholy, and loneliness, symbolically represented as a place far from “the sun that shines in the darkest place”—meaning it’s so far away that not even a single ray of light can be seen. It also tells us that he has been unable to see either “the colors of the world” or “life,” emphasizing that he doesn’t feel alive and that nothing he sees makes sense or has “color” in his current state. He regrets being in this isolated, dark place “again.”
This last point suggests that this isn’t the first time he’s found himself in this place, which leads us to think that perhaps he’s tried to escape that dark place more than once—like someone trying to climb out of a deep hole, only to end up falling back in again. We’ve all experienced something like this at some point in our lives. Whether you call it depression, loneliness, sadness, melancholy, or whatever, nobody likes to stay in a place like that, right? La siguiente canción es curiosamente parte del mismo álbum que el anterior y que también he escuchado mucho junto con las demás de esta pequeña lista desde que era apenas un adolescente. Una canción lenta, suave, tranquila y bastante melancólica como la mayoría de canciones de 3 Doors Down, la verdad. Away From The Sun es el cuarto sencillo del segundo álbum de estudio que lleva su mismo nombre y fue lanzado en el año 2004. Lo que lo hizo popular fue tanto su ritmo como su letra que llegó a influir en toda una generación.

Todos en algún momento de nuestras vidas hemos llegado a experimentar algo como esto. Llámese depresión, soledad, tristeza, melancólica o lo que sea, a nadie le gusta quedarse en un lugar así, ¿no? Pues hay quienes se acostumbran a vivir en un espacio así.
To wrap things up on a high note, I couldn’t think of a better way to do it than with another great song—another great single from the same album that gave us the two gems we’ve already mentioned. It’s a song that pretty much defines an entire generation that grew up listening to it from a young age and that still evokes more than just pure melancholy today. “Here Without You” is the third single from the band’s aforementioned second studio album, Away From The Sun (2002).
The song tells of a love that endures even when a couple is physically apart. The song hints at this from the very beginning, speaking of “a hundred days” that have aged the narrator and “a thousand lies” that have made him colder. But that distance between them—those “kilometers” that separate them—becomes nothing when our protagonist “dreams” of the person he misses so much. The chorus clearly describes how their love endures despite the distance, because the person they love is always in their mind and dreams.
This song is perfect for those currently in a “long-distance relationship”—which are quite common nowadays, thanks to the internet’s usefulness in this regard. There are couples who meet on social media, separated by distance because they’re from different countries, have to fulfill certain work commitments or obligations, and so on. I’ve even been in a long-distance relationship myself in the past, and I fully understand this feeling of longing and how absence isn’t always a problem when you have that special person in your thoughts and dreams.
Para finalizar de la mejor manera no encontré otra forma de hacerlo que con otra gran canción, otro gran sencillo del mismo álbum que nos trajo las anteriores dos joyas que hemos mencionado ya. Una canción que define bastante bien a toda una generación que llegó a crecer escuchándolo desde pequeños y que actualmente nos trae más que pura melancólica. Here Without You es el tercer sencillo del ya mencionado segundo álbum de estudio de la banda titulado Away From The Sun (2002).
La canción nos habla de un amor que persiste aún cuando una pareja está separada físicamente. La canción menciona ciertos indicios de esto desde el principio al hablar de “cien días“ que han hecho viejo al narrador y ”mil mentiras” que lo han hecho más frío. Pero dicha distancia que tienen, dichos “kilómetros” que los separan se vuelven nada cuando nuestro protagonista “sueña” con esa persona que tanta extraña. El coro es una clara descripción de cómo su amor persiste a pesar de la distancia debido a que siempre está en la persona que ama en su mente y sus sueños.
Esta canción es perfecta para identificar a esas personas que tienen una “relación a distancia” actualmente, que no son poco ahora con el internet siendo tan útil en esto. Hay parejas que se conocen en redes sociales, que los separa la distancia debido a ser de países diferentes, tener que cumplir con ciertas labores u obligaciones, etc. Incluso yo he llegado a tener una relación a distancia en el pasado y comprendo perfectamente esta sensación de añoranza y cómo la ausencia no siempre es un problema cuando tienes a esa persona especial en tus pensamientos y sueños.
