With the years and experience, I can now share with you how beneficial it has been to have rest schedules, which I consider normal in my daughter's daily routine. At first, at birth, and as all mothers who have gone through this know, even though not all babies are the same, their basic needs, especially feeding, usually make them wake up every three hours, including at night.
Fortunately, my daughter only got up once in the middle of the night, around 1 a.m., and woke up again to feed at 6:00 a.m. She kept this schedule for almost a year. I remember that to prevent her from getting used to sleeping in my bed, I would feed her on a pillow and then transfer her to her crib without waking up.
After she was a year old, she was on a more comfortable schedule for me. She went to sleep at 9 pm without having to force her. Of course, she woke up at 6:00 am every day, but that was fine because I got up early every day, so that wasn't a problem.
This nighttime bedtime schedule, which I confess she still maintains, was achieved with some measures or controls for her sleep at night, considering that she's grown, and many things change with age. The first thing is to allow her to watch TV until a certain time. In Dariana's case, she only watches her favorite programs until 9:00 pm, no later.
Regarding cell phone use, she only does it in the evenings or mornings, also with controlled schedules. At night, it is prohibited. So far, it remains the case. She doesn't even ask for it because she isn't in the habit of using it at night.
Silence and darkness are important; however, for younger children, it's important to have dim or minimal alternating light to create a safe environment. When my daughter was little, I always had a lamp in her room so she wouldn't be scared when she woke up in the middle of the night. Now, I just leave a dim light on that doesn't bother her directly, but lets you see glimpses of light, just in case.
A bath before bed is also very helpful, always with warm water that doesn't affect their body temperature. It also acts as a relaxant.
For younger children, reading a story at night becomes a habit; it's part of their bedtime routine. read by mom or the child if he or she is already of school age. Reading a book or a story is an automatic sedative at night; they get sleepy shortly after reading.
Another action we incorporate into the bedtime routine is prayer. Regardless of religion, it's important for children to be thankful for their day. It's a matter of faith that many parents choose to instill in their children from a young age. It's also automatic when they're at that moment, yawning begins, and it also contributes to the sleep routine.
When children go to sleep Or at least at home, Mom tells them it's time to say goodbye, they ask for blessings from all the family members at home, and when they're more conscious, they understand it's time to sleep. Pajamas are a must; they're a sign it's time to sleep.
I have no problem getting my 11-year-old daughter to sleep at a set time at night, without her feeling pressured other than the checks she knows or needs to ensure she gets at least 9 hours of rest at night and gets up at 6:30 in the morning voluntarily. As parents, we must be prepared with patience to achieve these healthy habits.
We all know, or need to know, that children need the sleep they need, in a friendly environment so they can improve their concentration in their studies and their academic performance is more productive. On the other hand, resting at night contributes to improving their memory, releasing hormones such as growth hormone, and also strengthening their immune system. Establishing a sleep routine with children creates emotional stability, prevents stress, and irritability. However, all these benefits are possible if sleep habits are created, and if it is done consciously or together with the children so that they see it as a healthy routine, it will cease to be an obligation for them. On the other hand, if they rest well, so do we.
