This is the view I have from the toilet. This is my bathroom. The kids don't use it. The wife doesn't use it. Just me. I come here to think, mostly. Behind me is a bookshelf full of historical and military literature. A half written book about my life I'll probably never finish.
In front of me are relics of the past. Photos, flags carried and flown in high profile places, low drag environments. A formerly ballistic vest. I sold the Kevlar to afford groceries. It was worn day and night for nearly a year. I am now unable to legally wear it anyways. I no longer use it but I do miss it. A dummy rifle. A 6mm plastic projectile firing tool, it used to serve as a training aid. Various patches from units past. I no longer need them but I am afraid to let them go. My old uniform. It's been repaired a hundred times. It's a comfort object. I no longer need it but here it sits until one day it may be needed again.
I'm feeling a little bit nostalgic but mostly depressed.
