Five years have passed since the last time Andrea and Sonia met. It was at Altagracia's wedding. That day they were able to talk about many things, but they could not do it alone. Although they had promised each other never to touch that subject again, Andrea had stirred up old events that put Sonia on alert, who tried at all times to remain in the company of her husband.
Andrea looked at a woman getting out of a cab and thought it was Sonia, but it was not: too ordinary, vulgar, to be her friend. Sonia was always an elegant woman, with a feline, provocative and imposing walk. She took a sip of coffee and remembered the last conversation they had had on the phone. Andrea had pointed her to a newspaper article she had happened to see. It was brief, perhaps insignificant, but Andrea had seen it and had been shaken by what little it said. Not knowing what to do, she thought only of calling her friend.
From her table, Andrea is attentive. The rain is heavier and it is cold. As cold as that night in December. She had always done what Sonia had asked her to do and that day was no exception. She remembered her friend's crying, her infinite sadness: "I don't know what to do with Gerardo, he suffocates me with his love", she had told her. "I need you to help me", she had implored him. Andrea was supportive, faithful, compassionate and did her part of the plan. Then came the distance, the silence. Andrea had thought it was because of the inquiries, but when she heard no more from Sonia, she felt used and rejected.
The coffee is finished and Sonia appears. She kisses her friend on the cheek and with one hand caresses Andrea's neck who immediately shivers. Andrea smiles and compliments the two-piece suit, the hair, the impeccable makeup. Sonia makes a sad face as she orders a cappuccino. "I don't know what to do with my husband, Andrea. Thank goodness I'm counting on you," Sonia said, placing one of her hands on Andrea's lap. Andrea listens, is confident, unconditional again and steps up to the plate. There, with the second cup of coffee and with a downpour that wets all the streets of the city, the two friends smile as they put the final touches to the master plan.
