Couple of days back while I was in Delhi, on one morning we decided to go around Delhi. It is the capital city of India and there are quite a few places to visit. I wanted this trip to be a relaxed one and not a sight-seeing one, so we were going easy. Also, it was hot and humid so being outdoors during day time was not very comfortable. The trip was a family reunion so the focus was also on spending more time with family and not outdoors.
We visited India Gate, one of the iconic landmarks of Delhi and also of India. The monument is a symbol of National pride. India Gate is a war memorial built in 1931. It was built in the honor of British Indian Army who sacrificed their lives in the World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. It's a 42 meters high structure built with yellow and red sandstone. The design looks more of less like the Arc de Triomphe of Paris which is also a war memorial. Thousands of soldiers' names are engraved on the monument.
When you visit such places, it takes you back in history; you feel the pain of that time. The part about World War I and II were that India was never a strategic target or had direct involvement in the war but because of the British presence in India in that period it got involved in the War and lost so many brave soldiers.
India Gate is the central place for the Republic day parade and also for many national celebrations. Or even if there are peaceful protest they are done here. On part of the road, there is no vehicle entry allowed. India Gate is India's symbol of sacrifice and resilience.
