Long time ago, sugar used to be one of the way for people to get lean. It is a form of diet until it has been proven through a lot of research, the detrimental effect of sugar for our health. This particular topics has been divided into 5 parts which explain the factors which affect the inclination to eat sugar and how can we make it under control.

The Brain Factor

Sugar is naturally addictive. It affect the reward center in the brain which will make you feel good when consuming sugar. As any other factor which affect the reward center of the brain, eventually we will need a huge amount in order to induce pleasure. Your brain become resistant to the usual amount of sugar and will require a large amount than before to induce the same pleasure and without realizing it, the amount we need to stimulate pleasure skyrocketing. Some of the people I've met sometimes, experience severe withdrawal symptoms if not eating sugar in which they referred it as hypoglycemia. The symptoms include headache, mood swings, tremor and irritability and this symptoms eventually disappear after consuming sugary food.

For those who doesn't know, we have a few hormones in the body which affect hunger and craving of sugar. These hormones are insulin, leptin and hormone sensitive lipase. Insulin is an anabolic hormone which transport glucose into the cell for energy. In hyperglycemic state, 70 g of glucose can be stored in the liver and approximately 200 g of glucose can be stored in the muscle. The excess of glucose will be stored in body fat which cause us to become fat.

Leptin is a satiety hormone which is released by adipose tissue i.e. fat cell to inhibit hunger in the brain. Increase amount of glucose being stored as fat will send a strong signal to the brain that your body is stuff. You must be thinking if satiety hormone is released by fat cell, generally, obese people would have less appetite. So why they have a huge amount of appetite which make them fatter? When we are consuming sugar, especially if a person consume lot of it, a huge amount of insulin will be released in the circulation. This hormone will block the leptin signal to the brain which make the hypothalamus unable to read the satiety signal, so the brain will think that the body was starving.

Wait a minute, if obese people have a lot of fat and fat was a form of stored energy can we just use those? Yes you can but you can't. Whether or not your body decided to use fat as energy to counteract the effect of reduced amount of glucose in the circulation will depends on the insulin. Hormone sensitive lipase is an enzyme that allows the body fat stored to be converted into ketone bodies in the liver to be used as an energy. The problem here was, this hormone is sensitive to insulin. If you have a high level of insulin after processing a lot of glucose in your body, insulin will not allow this hormone to used the fat storage. That's why when the amount of glucose reduced and we need sources of energy or any food to jack up our glucose level, we will get ravenously hungry. It's kind a like an irony, you have lots of energy stored, but unable to use them so you have to find other sources of energy.

People scared to quit sugar because they imagined how scary it is to underwent withdrawal symptoms and how the agony that they will face through. Its like they will suffer continuously until the give up and eat sugar again. The truth is, our body adapt to the absence of sugar. Ketone bodies was one of the sources of fuel that can be used by the brain in the process called ketosis. Quitting sugar can be unimaginable by most of the people, but it is highly rewarding.
