Troy was miner - it was his life. Everyday, that's where he lived and what he did.
He felt for many years like nothing was ever going to change - but there were changes occurring. All around.
He felt the earth, he looked at it. He shone his spotlight on it. Was it possible? There was writing in the earth. He smeared it, he even dug it, but it was never wiped away.
He looked towards the other men he worked with and asked them about it - how could it be? But they just looked in the other direction and ignored him. They just kept working the earth. Digging into the Earth.
Eventually, an old man walked towards him.
"Troy - what is your problem?"
"The earth, the clay. There's writing in it. It doesn't matter what I do. I can't wipe it away."
"Why the hell do you care?"
"I just don't understand - who put it there?"
"You did."
"What? Who the hell are you anyway?" The old man looked like Gandalf.
"I don't understand how I bloody did that. I am a miner, I didn't write on this soil."
"It is blockchain. You are a miner of Blockchain. I am a miner of blockchain. We all are. We just don't think about it."
"But how did it get into the earth. I didn't do that?"
"Relax Troy. Don't blow a gasket! It has worked it's way into the earth from mines around the world. As we mine the earth, it works further into the soil, into the Earth's crust."

"Next thing you know, and Elon Musk will be taking the blockchain and infiltrating it into Mars."
The two of them had been walking back towards the lift back out. He turned back to the old man.
"I understand cryptocurrencies and I've heard about blockchain. I just don't understand why it has to be worked into the earth."
"It is growing at an exponential rate. It is becoming like a virus, becoming infinite in it's need for power and need for space. How could that possibly be contained by a finite number of computers? It can't. We don't need humans to mine for fossil fuels anymore - we have basic Artificial Intelligence to do that. What we need and what we are doing is using humans to implant blockchain into the earth, down further and further. It used to rely on electrical energy that was created. Now, the blockchain relies on energy from the core of the earth. To grow, to exist. "
"What happens when we finally run out of space?"
The old man looked at him - he really did look like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings.
"Heaven help us Troy. None of us know. It falls back to the same question we have been asking for some time now about Artificial Intelligence: will there be a competition? Will there be a 'them or us'? The space that humans take may be of benefit of the blockchain, and it has developed to the point that it decides to eradicate humans in order to take over the space and energy that humans utilize."
Troy looked down at the soil and had a revelation. "So myself, and all the miner's with me. We're saving the lives of humans by working downwards."
"Your job is essential. I need you to keep going. It can't last forever, but it will last hopefully for some of us to develop an answer."
"who exactly is us?"
"The ones who developed blockchain. There is no original developer, no Satoshi Nakamoto. There is only a group of people who made it - who have to contain it or potentially have to destroy it." Troy just looked at him in a silence that was deafening. Was that possible?
"So Troy - back to your work. Support us to do what has to be done."
In an instant, the old man was gone.
Did he dream it? Who knows.
One thing he did know is there were not going to be anymore sick days for him!!
