Clematis vitalba is a shrub of the family Ranunculaceae.
Also known as old man's beard - a climbing shrub with branched, grooved stems, deciduous leaves. The many fruits formed in each inflorescence have long silky appendages which, seen together, give the characteristic appearance of old man's beard.
There is a strong root system. It blooms from late May to early September.
For healing purposes, collect the aboveground part of the plant - the flowers and leaves. Harvesting is done during flowering - May and June. The roots are also used for medical purposes but can be harvested year-round.
Toxic parts
All parts of the plant are poisonous, the toxic principle is dissipated by heat or by drying.
Despite serious safety concerns, clematis is used for joint pain (rheumatism), headaches, varicose veins, syphilis, gout, bone disorders, ongoing skin conditions, and fluid retention.
The plant is used to make one of Bach flower essence. Clematis vitalba is for people whose minds drift away from the present into fantasies of the future, or into alternative versions of the present. Often they dream of future success, creative endeavour and achievement. The danger is that they are not sufficiently anchored in reality to make their dreams happen.
