"Nnuwaalo: A Celebration of Harvest and Tradition"
In the heart of the Ogoni Kingdom, khana to be precise, between the third and fourth week of June every year, a festival known as Nnuwaalo is celebrated.
As a social documentary photographer, I had the privilege to capture the essence of this unique festival.
This event marks the celebration of the abundance of new farm produce like yams, corn, and more. It is a moment when the community unites to honor the fruits of their labor and ancestral traditions.
Nnuwaalo has a captivating ritual that sets it apart; when the masquerade comes out, it first pays a visit to the chieftaincy stool. Here, the head masquerade begins by collecting a calabash of water from a wise old woman within the house. The water is ceremoniously shattered upon the floor, symbolizing a sacred beginning before the grand display of the ceremony.
The head masquerade wears a mysterious mask that conceals its identity, making it stand out to the other participants who are dressed in fresh grass known as "zéégé" holding machetes and long canes that hold a sacred significance. These are not weapons of harm but rather instruments for the exhibition of their exceptional skills and traditions.
Another interesting thing to note about the masquerade is, that in the olden days, a unique practice of healing was one of the workings of the head masquerade. Young children who were sick of fever were given to the head masquerade and he would pass the child between his legs, and miraculously, they were restored to health. However, there was a condition; that the head masquerade must be a man without any stain of blood on his hands, ensuring the purity of this ancient rite.
After the festival is over, the masquerades will go back along the same path they came to the farm. There, they carefully undress, ensuring that no one can see or recognize them. Their outfit has sacred significance, so it is handled with care, for Nnuwaalo is not just a celebration but It tells a story of abundance, spirituality, and the unshaken commitment to keep a legacy that continues to live and grow in Ogoni Kingdom.
