🔧Not Everything Is Repairable: Power-On Failure and Display Issue on th LG K220 Mobile Phone. Diagnosis // No todo es reparable. Falla de encendido y Display móvil LG K220. Diagnóstico 📱
Good afternoon to @geekzone and the rest of the Hive community.
Buenas tardes para
@geekzone y el resto de hive.
Today we carried out several repairs in the workshop. We would like to share a particular case involving an LG mobile phone brought to us by an elderly woman. She told us that she was using her phone when it suddenly shut off. Once again, we are going to proceed with the diagnosis and, if the repair is within our capabilities, we will try to fix it.
DIAGNOSIS
DIAGNÓSTICO
- First, we are going to measure the battery voltage. However, this battery is glued to the frame, and its contacts and connector are hidden under the back cover, so we will have to open the phone. Once it is open, based on our experience, we know that there are usually test points near the battery connector, specifically designed to measure the parameters of the various lines. We inspect the board and find three test points near the connector in this case. We set our multimeter to DC voltage mode, place the black probe on any ground point (GND) on the board, and use the red probe to take measurements. At the first point from top to bottom, we find a voltage of 3.228 V. This is undoubtedly the battery voltage, and it is not sufficient to turn on the phone. At least 3.6 V is required.
- We are going to measure the reference value at the point where we found voltage to check for a short circuit or leakage. We set the multimeter to diode mode, place the red probe on the positive side at GND, and the black probe on the test point. We obtain a reading of 0.430 V. This value is correct, so for now, we can rule out a short circuit on the main line.
- So far, everything looks good. We will connect the phone directly to the power supply and set it to 4.2 V. We solder one wire to ground on the phone and another to the test point we are working with, which corresponds to the battery line known as VBAT. We connect the power supply clips to these wires, which have solder on both ends, making sure to respect the correct polarity. Initially, there is no current draw. We press the power button, and the current remains at 0 A. This is very unusual. Either the power management IC is completely damaged, or the fault lies in the power button. These are our two main hypotheses.
- We will first check the condition of the power button, since this is the less complicated possibility. Because the contacts are located on the underside of the board, we will have to remove it to access them. We reconnect the power supply clips to the soldered wires and use our multimeter in DC voltage mode to measure the voltage at those contacts. We obtain a reading of 4 V, so for now, the voltage at this point is correct. We perform a quick test by bridging these contacts with tweezers, and we see a small current draw of 0.081 A on the power supply. Although the current draw is small, it indicates that the PMIC, or power management IC, is working. The phone will not fully turn on this way without the battery because it needs the ID signal associated with the battery.
- Here we have a discrepancy. The power-on circuit appears to be working because current is drawn from the power supply when we bridge the two contacts. However, the same does not happen when we press the power button normally. At this point, we suspect there may be a continuity problem between the contacts and the button pins. We check continuity, and everything is correct, so the only possibility left is poor contact between the power button pins on the board and the corresponding contacts on the cover. Therefore, we clean them and apply a little solder to each one.
- We reinstall the board, reconnect the battery connector, reconnect the power supply clips to the soldered wires according to their polarity, and press the power button. Now it works! The phone turns on, but another problem appears: the screen is black with white squares. We have reached our final diagnosis. The phone was not turning on because of a problem with the button pin contacts, which we have already fixed. However, the screen is now confirmed to be damaged and needs to be replaced.
Unfortunately, for mobile phones of this type that are more than 10 years old, finding new replacement parts in stores is difficult, especially for an LG device. This is an LG X Power K220. LG stopped manufacturing mobile phones a few years ago. To find a replacement display, we would have to wait until we find another identical phone with a damaged motherboard but a working screen, so we could transfer the screen to this device. We wanted to share this particular case because not everything can always be repaired. Sometimes the damage to a specific component is too severe, or we simply do not have the necessary part or cannot find a replacement for the damaged LCD. In such cases, we have to deliver the bad news to the customer. It might seem like a relatively minor matter, but this phone belongs to someone who has virtually no chance of buying another one. In situations like this, the customer is left feeling sad about losing her phone and being left without communication, while we are left feeling disappointed that we could not help her.
