Here we are again, this time with a new project involving a drip irrigation system, this time for coffee cultivation. It is a small area, only 1.5 ha belonging to a private producer.
To begin this work, we started with a detailed topographic survey at a scale of 1:2000, which contains the necessary planimetric and altimetric information: the former represents on the plan the boundaries of the work area, fences, trees, roads, rivers, and buildings, if any, while the latter represents the contour lines, which indicate the connection of points with the same elevation above mean sea level.
In what follows, we will look at the initial aspects of the project until we reach the complete field division of the area.

FIELD DIVISION
CAMPIFICACIÓN
1-The field division consists of dividing the work area into subareas for better operation, assigning irrigation shifts whose interval and irrigation time have already been defined in section 6, Irrigation Schedule. It also includes the layout of the distribution pipes and irrigation laterals that contain the emitters. It is determined whether these distribution pipes will be fed from one end or from the middle.
To speed up the field division process, we will use Irricad software, which requires a paid license. To use it, we will follow a series of initial steps consisting of:
1.1- Initial configuration.
Once the tool is open, under Configuration we select the units, for example, flow rate in L/s, emitter flow rate L/m, and so on, as shown in the image.
1.2- Importing the background map.
Beforehand, we must have saved the background map in DXF format with the boundaries of the area to be irrigated and the water source. In Irricad, under the File tab, we choose the Import option. A dialog box appears; we locate the DXF file and load it. We will then have the elements in our drawing area to begin dividing the area into fields.
1.3- Initial field division.
Since we already have the background map imported, we select the area to be divided into fields, then select the Drip Tape Irrigation Block icon on the toolbar. In the window that appears, we choose an irrigation lateral type, in this case, one with a 16 mm diameter, with pressure-compensating drippers spaced at 0.6 m, with a working flow rate of 1.6 L/h. We also specify the spacing between laterals, which is 3 m. We also adjust the characteristics of the distribution pipes and click Accept. The entire area will then be filled with laterals, and the distribution pipe will also be placed.
1.4- Considering that an irrigation system generally does not consist of a single field, we will subdivide our system evenly to define two irrigation shifts. Remember that, according to the irrigation schedule, our irrigation time is 3 hours and 17 minutes. Since our system will be powered by pumping with solar panels, we will have a maximum of two irrigation shifts of this duration, because photovoltaic pumping imposes a maximum daily irrigation time of 6 to 7 hours, corresponding to peak solar radiation. We now select the Subdivide Irrigation Block icon on the toolbar. In the window that appears, we configure the settings needed to obtain two uniform fields. We click Accept, select the irrigated area, and finally we will have two irrigation fields, each with its own distribution pipe and inlet valve.
1.5- Assigning irrigation shifts.
We preliminarily lay out the main pipeline from the water source using the software tool, select the Assign Zones to Shifts icon, and configure our two irrigation shifts.
Next, we go to the menu bar, select Draw, and in the drop-down menu choose the Management Symbol option. We click on a part of the drawing, and a legend showing the areas by irrigation shift is inserted, with each shift represented by a different color.
1.6- Exporting the drawing.
At this point, we already have a general layout. We go to File, select Export, and export a file in DXF format to start working with WaterGems and AutoCAD.
At this point, we have completed the field division. We still need to define the diameters of the two distribution pipes, the main pipeline, and the flow and head characteristics of the pumping station. We could certainly do all of this in Irricad itself; however, I already have WaterGems configured, and it is more convenient for me to do it there, including the optimal design option.
