INTRODUCTION
This week's Battle Mage Secrets is about Briar Patch, which gives monsters the ability of Thorns. Thorns is an ability for melee attack monsters, in which damage is returned to the melee attacker. Thorns is a common term for abilities or skills in most games. I remember when playing Diablo, one of my favorite characters was the Paladin, and I liked the Thorns aura to support my allies.
Battle Rules
The battle I'm sharing is a 3 rule battle. The maximum mana requirement is 55, and elements to be use will be fire, death, earth, dragon and neutral.
Rule Set
- Equaliser - The initial Health of all Monsters is equal to that of the Monster on either team with the highest base Health.
- Lost Legendaries - Legendary Monsters can't be used. Legendary Summoners are still available though.
- Briar Patch - All monsters receive the Thorns ability at the start of the battle. Enemy monsters that use melee attacks receive damage back. Melee attack monsters with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from thorns. The Amplify ability increases damage.

Battle Line Up
Considering the battle rules, mana requirements, and elemental categories for this battle, I came up with my lineup, which I have tabulated below. I chose Immortalis as my summoner since I am expecting magic-type attack monsters from my enemy. We have to take note that one of the battle rule is Briar Patch, avoiding melee monsters in your lineup will be a good strategy. From my line up, I used 1 melee, 2 archer and 3 magic attack type.
| Immortalis | Level 4 | -1 health, Void, shatter |
|---|---|---|
| Mycelic Infantry | Level 8 | Shield, Giant Killer, Enrage |
| Gorgoya Devil | Level 8 | Flying, close range, deathblow |
| Mycelic Slipspawn | Level 8 | Taunt, forcefield, slow |
| Scavo Technomancer | Level 8 | Blast, rust, blind |
| Goblin Psychic | Level 10 | Taunt, Tank heal, silence, dispel |
| Uloth Dhampir | Level 5 | Stun, Triage |
As the battle start, we have same summoner but of difference position and monster used. See below line up of my enemy. He uses monster with 1 melee, 2 magic type and 3 range attack type.
| Immortalis | Level 4 | -1 health, Void, shatter |
|---|---|---|
| Mycelic Infantry | Level 8 | Shield, Giant Killer, Enrage |
| Regal Paryton | Level 8 | Flying |
| Goblin Psychic | Level 10 | Taunt, Tank heal, silence, dispel |
| Supply Runner | Level 10 | Swiftness, strengthen |
| Venari Seedsmith | Level 5 | Scavenger, poison |
| Goblin Tower | Level 8 | Blast |
Result of the Battle
The battle resulted to my win and below are the reasons why I made it.
Both summoners were used, and the difference is in the use of ranged attack monsters. He used 3 archers, which in the end was a disadvantage as this type of monster does not attack in the first position. In my case, I used 2 archers, but one of them had a close-range ability (Gorgoya Devil), which allowed it to attack in the first position. The advantage of this could be seen during rounds 13 and 16. In round 13, the enemy had 2 archers remaining, but technically only 1 was actually giving damage. Finally, in round 16, he only had 1 archer remaining, but it only became a stationary target as it could not attack in the first position.
Second reason is the blind ability provide by Scavo Technomancer which made his monster miss their attack especially that he has 3 range monster and 1 melee. Blind ability is effective on this type of monster.
Third reason is the used of Mycelic Slipspawn, which cancel Supply Runner swiftness ability due to its slow ability. This monster has also taunt ability that enemy monster will first attack it. Having supported by Scavo Technomancer has made it very nice diversion. The enemy has Goblin Tower that has blast ability but the only reason that it becomes not effective is because of its 1 speed.
Enjoying Splinterlands
The game is very challenging as you really have to think and guess what your opponent's strategy will be given the rules. You have to consider what cards they have, whether they come from rental or if they bought them. The rewards are always exciting as they are by chance, and you will be surprised by the outcome. Everyone is hoping to get a legendary gold foil, packs, and a high amount of $SPS, preferably 3 to 4 digits.
More power to Splinterlands! I really enjoy this game, and in 4 months, it will be my 2nd anniversary. Join us! Here is my referral link: https://splinterlands.com?ref=multicastx7
