Bird Photography and Relaxation. [Eng/Esp]

Near my house there’s a small lagoon with vegetation typical of these ecosystems, which is ideal for birds because they find food and shelter there. Not only the birds, but I, too, find refuge from daily stress when I visit to take photos.

You have to walk a bit to get there—it’s about 3.5 km away—and you have to follow the railroad tracks; there’s no other path, which makes it even more exciting.

It’s peak bird season in Cuba right now; migratory birds from North America have just started arriving, so I’m taking every opportunity to have them pose for me.

How do I go about taking their picture? First, I look for a spot I like with the right light, and then I sit and wait, ready in case one shows up.

When one arrives, I have a few seconds to snap the shot, and that’s it. Most of the time, I don’t like the result—out-of-focus photos or the bird simply flies away. But other times, I love how they turned out.

Cuando llega, me da algunos segundos para disparar y ya está. La mayoría de las veces no me gusta el resultado: fotos fuera de foco o simplemente se va. Pero en otras me encanta cómo han quedado.

My friends say this is becoming an obsession, but in my defense, the thrill of waiting months for a photo of a specific species is so great that when I finally get it, it’s pure joy.

Mis amigos dicen que esto se convierte en un vicio, pero en mi defensa digo que es tanta la emoción de esperar meses por una foto de una especie determinada, que cuando se logra es pura felicidad.
