The Golden Fish: in this stone, an astonishing painting has formed, looking as if it is a fish swimming fluidly and gracefully through misty waters permeated by light.
Hello Hive and Gems Community!
As an artisan who spends hours cutting, shaping, and polishing stones, there is no feeling quite like the moment a raw mineral split opens to reveal a world hidden for millions of years. Today, I want to share a few recent pieces of Yemeni Scenic Agate (العقيق المصور) that I have been working on. Each stone holds a miniature masterpiece sketched entirely by nature.
The secret of the beauty of Yemeni agate lies in the amazing way it interacts with light. When light is projected directly behind the stone, the internal layers and rich, warm color gradients reveal themselves. This second piece shows a prominent vertical formation, looking like a bird gazing upward, or a figure standing in a state of contemplation.
Each piece requires a precise cutting process and soft polishing to protect the surface and make it perfectly smooth, while fully preserving the natural "painting" hidden inside without any alteration. In this piece, a beautiful contrast appears between the sharp dark lines and the warm orange shading, giving the shape a comfortable visual balance.
Shaping and crafting these stones is a slow process that requires a lot of patience, but seeing these small windows that encapsulate the earth's history makes every minute spent in the workshop truly worth it.
I am very interested to hear your thoughts, and what shapes or figures did you imagine when looking at these pieces? Thank you for stopping by and for your continuous support of my artisan journey!
