Here we are, getting ready to say goodbye to one month and hello to the next one! It got me to thinking about the funny way we perceive time, as time passes. ![1046-BachelorButton.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/denmarkguy/23w2ebY65iucUwVygDdLVxPWwFBBEcYd1Q9A3JKLHpLVRCCRWMH2FQMCoyMjsnpGGyNzC.jpg) I remember being a kid and finding it funny how the more senior adults in the family would sit around and say things like *"time flies"* and *"how did it already get to be Monday?"* As far as I was concerned, time didn't seem to fly at all, least of all when I was sitting in Mr. Loft's geography class! 55 years later, I am sitting here wondering how it got to be June already and chuckling to myself about the way our perception of time indeed *does* change! These days, I can't really think of a single incidence of time seeming to move *slowly*, except maybe for when I am lying awake at 3:00 a.m. and am trying to go back to sleep after feeling the need to drink a glass of water in the middle of the night. That's when time really seems to drag... It makes me wonder whether this whole *"time relativity"* thing has to do with where we are in our stage in life. As in we *actually* measure time — or our *perception* of time — in terms of how much life *(we think)* we have left. ![0805-Nigella.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/denmarkguy/23x176gsWpA5z3RztLzajkDZfiDdE16dYdZK451yfxCQtG4mUcauhh2sNBkFLitpawcKH.JPG) You know, somehow our brain subconsciously calculates how many years we have left to live and divides them into a million *(or some constant number)* segments, and 55 years later we do the same thing, now dividing *far fewer* years into a million segments and thus the individual segments seem much smaller than they used to be. It's just a working theory, I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about! I spent another day outside doing yard work today. As I alluded to in yesterday's post, gardening is great because it helps ground me and I get away from screen time and doomscrolling... but, on the other hand, it's also the time when I might go into *free flow thinking* and that can end up at *"thinking too much."* I suppose it's all a side effect of what you might describe as being a *"worrywart"* which is something that has been true for my life for as long as I can remember. I just find it really hard to *"turn off"* my brain completely, and even when I'm sleeping it usually ends up with being rather vivid Technicolor dreams. ![0883-Lathyrus.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/denmarkguy/23wqijz1zk6ghYQPxfLNj2JNf3YamajFHn3MYCUhdAeZUXWnFoRmTxCN46MBbbi2jcSkh.JPG) When I was little, I would worry about doing something that would make my parents yell at me, or being bullied at school, or being called on in class, or my bicycle getting a flat tire... and all these years later I hack away at blackberry vines while worrying about how we're going to be able to afford our ever-increasing home insurance premiums, whether anybody is going to buy anything from my eBay store today, and whether my doctor is going to find some ailment requiring expensive treatment next time I go in for a health check up. Those are basically the bones of what many people describe as *"thinking too much."* But, try as I might, I have never been able to turn those thoughts off.
