Scientific Name
In the scientific world, this small planthopper is known as Sardia rostrata (Wilson & Claridge, 1991).
Family and Genus
According to biological classification, this insect belongs to the order Hemiptera. It is a species of the genus Sardia under the family Delphacidae.

Native Habitat and Distribution
They are mainly distributed in Australia, China, France, Iran, and Sri Lanka. Recently in Bangladesh, it has been recorded for the first time from the coastal Boro rice ecosystem in Dumki Upazila of Patuakhali district. They are mostly found in rice fields, plants around wetlands, and moist areas.

Food and Host Plants
They are mainly herbivorous or sap-dependent insects. They obtain nutrition by sucking sap from the stems and leaves of rice, maize, wheat, barley, sugarcane, taro (Colocasia esculenta), and Sesbania plants.

Size and Lifestyle
They are very small and light in structure. The length of an adult male planthopper is 3.5 to 4 mm, and the female is up to 3.8 to 4.5 mm long. Although their entire body is jet black, the antennae, rostrum, and legs are yellowish-white. The front part of their head is narrower and sharper than that of ordinary hoppers. Their two wings are cloudy blackish, but translucent white spots can be seen on the front edges.

Benefits
Identifying them plays a very important role in ensuring proper Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the agricultural ecosystem and maintaining an accurate record of insect species in our country's biodiversity.

Harmful Effects
Since they suck sap from the stems and leaves of crops, they can be considered harmful agricultural pests for rice and other crops. However, they do not cause any harm to humans nor do they bite.

I learned about them from various sites including iNaturalist, Wikipedia and Google.
