Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that affects plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to help fight infection. In multiple myeloma, abnormal plasma cells begin to multiply and produce large amounts of a monoclonal immunoglobulin or M protein. These abnormal plasma cells can crowd out the blood cells and damage bones and other organs of the body.
