Steem power-down series - Ravencoin (RVN)

Welcome to the next instalment of what I did with the STEEM from my steem power-down as a result of the hard-fork that led to the creation of hive.

I invested a small amount of my steem into Ravencoin - I did this by trading some of the BNB that I was HODLing on Binance exchange for RVN. Ravencoin is one of those alts that I have known about for a couple of years - it has been there or thereabouts in the top 100 crypto assets over that period. Nicholas Merten aka crypto-influencer DataDash is a proponent of the project and I learned a bit about it through some of his videos, but it wasn't until earlier this year that I acquired some RVN myself through some twitter giveaways that I started to pay it close attention.

What is Ravencoin?

Ravencoin is a peer-to-peer blockchain, handling the efficient creation and transfer of assets from one party to another.

It's also an ASIC-resistant (since their last hard-fork that updated the mining algorithm) proof-of-work blockchain that has been picking up a bit of steam lately because small-time ETH miners are looking for the next thing to mine due (so I've heard) to the impending launch of (the proof-of-stake) ethereum v2. It's one of the leading players in the emerging (has been 'emerging' for about two years now!) security tokens space and in its early days was famously bootstrapped by NASDAQ-listed tech company Overstock.

Ravencoin's twitter account tells a fascinating story through its meme-like posts (whoever writes these is a genius!). This is essentially how I became slightly obsessed. I have curated my favourites for your reading pleasure. Enjoy!

on Ravencoin and decentralisation -

No one from Ravencoin has ever called or pitched Coinbase because there is no one “from Ravencoin”. Instead it’s a strong group of contributors, devs and volunteers. All volunteer, no leader, no marketing or budget.

Raven has no official outreach or process of communicating with exchanges. Exchanges who list RVN for trading have all done so voluntarily and at no charge. Who will be first of the next major exchanges to support this community open source/ no fundraise / no premine project?

We see times of record money printing & centralization of global power. This is the time for this decentralized, permissionless protocol that allows IPFS & messaging. Cypherpunk. No leaders. No central control. No fundraise or treasury. Open. Free Power to the people.

Ravencoin has no budget and does not employee anyone. No one owes Ravencoin anything because Ravencoin is an idea not an entity. All that’s been built has been built by choice. No one owes Ravencoin anything but Ravencoin also has no obligations, employees or contracts.

Ravencoin is decentralized, permissionsless and open. There is no central organization or funding. No payroll, no rent, no expenses. This makes the project more anti-fragile and less prone to attacks, bad economies or global crisis. Raven is a very large distributed system.

If you are waiting for a big partnership announcement... oh boy do we have some news for you! Ready... ‘There are no partnerships, never have been and never will be. Ravencoin is free, open and yours to use forever. No permission needed from anyone ever.’ That’s the news.

on Ravencoin and sovereignty -

If you would like to issue a token or create a project using the cutting edge decentralized blockchain technology of Ravencoin all you need to do is submit a proposal to the committee for review & approval. By “committee” that means you! Now go build. RVN -No permission needed!

When you create a digital asset or token using Ravencoin you control it. Not a social media company, not a tech CEO, no boards no executives, no censors, no master nodes, no validators, no functionaries, no government officials...just you. Decentralization is important today.

on politics and neutrality -

Ravencoin is apolitical and is independent of the politics, beliefs, race, gender or religion of its users. Anyone of any belief or political party can use it. No matter how powerful your enemies and no matter what country you live in ...your Ravencoin asset cannot be cancelled.

Ravencoin doesn’t know or care what color, gender identity, religion, race or political beliefs you have. There is no one with the power to judge you or anything about you or your use of the RVN protocol.

it's unstoppable -

Nobody can stop a message, transaction, IPFS addition or asset creation on Ravencoin — not Twitter, not the President of the US or the Premier of China — no one can stop the network and no one controls or can be ordered to control the network. Simple & secure, backed by code

The chain keeps going. The code still works and the blocks still validate. Times are uncertain and investments even more so. But code is constant.
