Ships don't sink because of the water they sail on, they sink because of the water in them.
This very quote applies to me. In my early years of growing up, it is difficult to understand how many things work. One usually thinks that not everything ought to be yours. My take on wealth, prosperity, and life, in general, is predestination. This was my mindset all the while.
As time progressed, I got to know that my desires can be met if I jolly well pursue them. That it is not destined for an individual to remain where they are.
I would see people driving in beautiful cars each time I travel to the metropolis. It was there that I noticed people who hail from the darkest part of the world can turn their misfortune into an eye-boggling life of achievement.
We were not born with a silver spoon in our mouth but we never went to bed on an empty stomach. My parents and other families who lived around our neighborhood were of the view that you could go to school and work in a good place to earn a fat salary. That is the premise on which I went to school, hoping that a good and well-paying job will come in handy. What is meant to be?
One of my images of how to make ends meet and have a lot of financial freedom was to work as a banker. I saw bankers as though all the money in the bank vault belonged to them. Little did I know that it all doesn't work that way.
Sometimes, I dreamed of myself working in a big bank. This perspective influenced my decision in choosing a career. The dream of becoming a banker is a reflection that will linger for a long while.
All these were because I want to live a comfortable life. I want to be a responsible father, providing for my family as much as possible. Living in a serene environment devoid of influence on my wards and whatnot informed this reflection.
My dreams were about to fall flat on its face because the secondary school I attended did not have enough teachers to take up the core subjects that would qualify me to study accountancy or banking at a higher institution. And since teaching was not encouraging, graduates were opting for other jobs other than teaching. This punctured my dream. When I saw that nothing may come out of my wish to become a banker, bearing all indexes around me, I had to drift to the art department.
Several years have passed now and I am proud that I did the art. Even though I have a passion for banking, I moved away because of the unavailability of human resources in my high school. One thing that made me enjoy art is that after I let the management sciences, I did not picture myself in it anymore. I have found a new wine that sounds more interesting than what I used to think was the best.
It is good to plan and have big dreams, to see yourself in a high highly-placed office. It is good to have those great reflexes you have seen or read about, life doesn't end there anyways. Most things you have seen or heard or read may not be the end point, it may be the starting.
Today, I have seen individuals like Chimanda Adichie, Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, Jeffery Hatcher, Flora Nwakpa and many others who are in the art of making life better than they met it.
