Supremost comeradium?
That was the chant I heard as I approached the kegites base near the student union building. The kegites were known to be a merry making club in higher institutions. They celebrate whenever they come together with highlife music in the presence of Palm wine. Some of us who are not part of the society back then in school do refer to them unserious elements.
On that day, as I walked towards the kegites base in search of my roommate who liked hanging round the base to listen to some high life music but refused to be a member. Obi Christian was my day one friend when I got admission at the University.
I had earlier lost my own bunch keys to our hostel. My only means of getting into our apartment was to retrieve Obi Christian's bunch of keys.
One step further, the response from other present members of the club made me rush towards the scene. It sounded like their mid-week gyration was about to begin.
Is a Chiefee
Obi Christian had intentionally missed our philosophy lectures three times consecutively because he sneaked out to watch the kegites gyration. I knew very well that he was on the verge of missing out on this lecture today again. It was just a lucky day because I have heard Dr. Farayola telling his colleague, Professor Laz that he would be conducting an impromptu test in our philosophy class on that day.
This is why I had to rush to look for my dear friend, Obi Christian. Unfortunately, I couldn't find him at the kegites base. Instead of leaving to look elsewhere for him, the sonorous songs that the kegites were singing made me pitch my tent at the base barely thirty minutes before the lecture began.
One kegite after another entered the base and their number increased then the merry making became more entertaining. I got engrossed the most, forgetting that my mission was to fetch Obi Christian.
Ten minutes before the lectures will begin, I was still watching the kegites display their tipsiness as they sipped from their calabash of Palm wine. It was such an entertaining sight.
As I continued gazing at the kegites while they displayed the art of drunkenness and musicality, I suddenly realized that I ought to be at the lecture theater. Quickly, my legs obeyed the command from my head, I ran towards the lecture theater when I met Obi Christian, held him and together we ran towards the lecture hall.
Dr. Farayola will not allow any student into the lecture hall once he steps into the hall. We were so lucky to reach the lecture hall before Dr. Farayola got there.
We were panthing like sprinters as we sunk into the seats in the middle of the hall, Dr. Farayola appeared from the inner room in the lecture theatre, then everywhere went dead silent.
Tear a sheet of paper, write your name and matric number and answer only one of the following questions.
Dr. Farayola's voice came like a spark in the silence. Then, the noise of paper tearing from the middle of the collection of paper leaves.
He gave out four questions from which we chose only one. It was for twenty marks and I was glad that my friend and I did not miss it.
My friend, Obi Christian was all over me that day. He could have missed the lecture as usual which would have made him lose twenty marks. From that day onward, Obi Christian never missed any lecture no matter the social event that was happening on campus.
