Alexis is a single mother who decided to take responsibility for her wards six years ago. The events that led to her being a single mother are filled with intricacies but she has made up her mind to live like this for the rest of her life.
Chiba and Mamanda, her two children never had the opportunity to know who their father is. While Chiba is eight years old, Mamanda is six. He was just two years old when Adebo, their father left, unannounced. By then, Alexis was heavily pregnant with Mamanda.
That's six years ago. Things were so tight back then. But now, life has been a melody to her and the kids.
A year after she was delivered of Mamanda, Alexis got a job as secretary to the manager of the famous Highlander Travel Agent.
During the long school vacation period that spans from June to September, Highlander is usually very busy with people who want to prepare travel documents to go on vacation in parts of Africa and Europe while some are busy booking flights and hotel reservations for their vacation.
In the middle of all these, Alexis is at the receiving end. She is fatigued with the load of work she had to attend to on her desk.
So that the kids don't get affected, she sought the services of a house help. Zoba, the house help is a beautiful village girl who has been through high school but had no one to sponsor her through the university.
She would keep the house and prepare meals for Alexis and the kids. It wasn't long, the golden fish has nowhere to hide, Zoba started acting like a home teacher to Chiba and Mamanda.
Sooner than anyone thought, the kids never.missed their mother, Alexis. Zoba is such a beautiful soul.
After their primary education, Mamanda got admission to the government girls school in Umuofia while Chiba went to central technical college. That left Zoba to only clean the home which she does very well.
Each time Alexis returned from work, tired and sleepy, Zoba would have served her food and water to clean up before retiring to bed.
Most often, Alexis returned to work with all files she had brought home to work on.
One evening, she assigned Zona to help complete the task and she did it so perfectly.
Out of joy, she promised to sponsor Zona through the university. It was like a dream came through.
When the joint matriculation board examination form was released, Alexis fulfilled her promise to Zoba. She sat for the exam and gained admission to the university, all to be sponsored by Alexis.
During the holidays, Mamanda and Chiba returned home to meet Zoba's absence. The whole house seemed empty.
Mom, did you lay Zoba off?
Mamanda asked with curiosity.
No, my dearie. She gained admission to the university to study Pharmacy.
Alexis said to Mamanda.
But this whole house seemed empty without her.
Now, everywhere went dead silent, like a graveyard.
Alexis had to lecture her children on the need to sacrifice. It was their role to keep a good future.
You know, I have to make money to keep you both. Pay all the bills and send you to a good school.
She asked them to bear with her for the time being.
One gracious day, during their holiday period, Mamanda and Chiba went to the city library to read the latest book, the tempest. They spent the whole day reading only to wake up to the reality that it was night.

Reaching home, their mother, Alexis had reached home and slept on the couch. Out of exhaustion, Alexis was snoring that as Mamanda and Chiba were knocking at the door, she could not hear them.
They stood there for over two hours and all effort to make Alexis open the door for them proved abortive. Mamanda had already gone tired standing. She sat at the door, posing to sleep when Zoba returned from school. She was surprised to see them standing outside.
With her spare key, she unlocked the door and together, they all went in.
