"I'd like to buy a record player."
Is that what you call it. Not a turntable?
"Call it what you want. I want to play records again."
A beautiful sound.
"Why do you wish to listen to records again?" asked the store assistant.
"Because, I have a box of old records I wouldn't mind listening to," I replied.
"You're not alone sir. We've had a big influx of this in the past year or so."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yes. We're selling lots of them, sir."
"That's very interesting," I remarked. "There's something about the sound. So warm and vibrant."
"It sure is that, sir. You can also pick up old LPs in charity shops and car boot sales."
"Nice,” I said. “I could have fun hunting.”
"Indeed sir. Would you like me to advise you on a good model?"
"Please do," I said.
The store assistant showed me the turntables that he had on offer. That's right, I call it a turntable now.
Eventually, I picked out one to buy and took it home. I was so excited. I couldn't wait to set it up.
There was just one little glitch. I had forgotten to top up the electricity. I’d rather pay this way. One less direct debit to think about. That's all good, until you forget to top it up.
Ten minutes later, I am at the local newsagent.
"Can I put £10 on this key please?" I asked.
"Of course, that'll be £10 please."
"Of course it's £10,"
I got a strange look.
Note: I had to leave the story at this point, but I wanted to conclude the story the next day.
But, there was just one problem. I didn’t have enough money in my wallet.
“There’s a cash machine around the corner.”
I went to the cash machine to draw out the money. Next door, there is a charity shop. I notice that there is a big crate of vinyl records by the window.
There’s about 40 albums, some I like, some I would like to experiment with. They were in very good condition.
“You can have the crate for £20.”
Wow. 50p a record. What a find.
I went back to the newsagent to top up the electricity key.
“I bet you wish you were paying by Direct Debit.”
“No,” I replied.
“Why not?” asked the newsagent.
“Because, if I did, I wouldn’t have found these records.”
“Then you need to make sure you top up your key. Especially when you start going into emergency credit.”
“Emergency credit?” I asked.
“Oh, you didn’t know you have emergency credit. Maybe it’s good that you didn’t know about that either.”
