A few years ago a humanitarian foundation contacted a former president of an important country to ask him to exercise some responsibilities in it. He accepted the offer, but to everyone's surprise, he preferred to do manual work rather than occupy an important position. This is how this man, who had led a country, joined a team of bricklayers. He wore a worker's suit to work on a construction site. During the day he used the hammer and the mason's palette, and at night he slept with the other workers in the basement of a church. By his modesty and humility he showed, as the Lord Jesus taught, that true greatness is not found in the function he occupies, but in the attitude one has towards one's neighbor.

That self-denial is only a weak sample of what Jesus did for us when He came to earth to share our condition. He was God, and became man, humbled himself to obey his Father even unto death, and death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). Jesus perfectly manifested God's love for us. That love is for us, for men all over the world, for the Bible declares: "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Go to Jesus! He loved you to death for you.
