In the Middle Ages, when they built a cathedral, they attached a solid iron ring to the base of one of its walls, called the "salvation ring". It was enough for a malefactor to hold on to it to be momentarily safe from his persecutors. There was also a "space of salvation" delimited around those same cathedrals; this was a place of asylum in which no one could be detained.

These measures made it possible to soften the implacable justice of those times. Probably this idea was inspired by the "cities of refuge" mentioned in the Bible, which were destined to receive the involuntary authors of a homicide (Numbers 35:11). The murderers who took refuge there could only stay there if it was proven that they had not killed voluntarily.

Today we still need a "city of refuge" to escape God's judgment, not only for our involuntary faults but, above all, for each of our acts of disobedience to God.

The author of these lines had to acknowledge one day that he was guilty and deserved divine condemnation. His past life was a succession of offenses against God, and his decisions were often motivated by selfishness and pride. What did he do? To cling firmly to the "ring of salvation", that is, to the hand that God has been holding out to men for so long. He placed his trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who atoned for his sins, voluntary and involuntary.
