In the old town of Phuket, I captured many photos of the buildings because their architecture and their vibrant and colorful facades were fascinating to me.
The architecture of Phuket’s Old Town is a blend of Sino-Portuguese styles that were formed by Chinese merchants and European traders during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The prosperity of Phuket as a tin-producing center attracted wealthy Chinese merchants and their European business partners. The buildings facing the street were mostly two-story shop-houses where the upper floor was a residence, typical for Chinese courtyard houses, while the lower floor was a shop, an extension of the street frontage. This architecture is colorful and tangle, with intricate Chinese woodwork details. European elements include classical arches, columns, and windows with shutters. Unfortunately, most of this architectural heritage is now abandoned, and it is sad to see how it is degraded and neglected, which will inevitably affect the development of this area
This architecture needs to be preserved and maintained to continue being one of the significant attractions of Phuket, not only for its cultural heritage but also for future generations of locals and tourists. However, at the moment, there is a real threat that this architectural legacy will be lost and disappear into oblivion.
Have you ever been to an old part of a city with unique architecture that was growing old and run down? How do you think that community could best preserve and protect their character for years to come? Let me know in the comments!
