In the traditional houses of Iran, you can see these beautiful colorful glass windows called “Orosi.” The thing is that many believe that the purpose of these amazing stained glasses is to confuse insects such as flies and mosquitoes so that they cannot find their way out.
Actually, this is a scientific opinion since, according to the research, the color of the lights emitted through these glasses does not repel insects.
However, they do change the proportion of sunlight spectrum passing through the windows, meaning that the sunlight, which is essential for the orientation of these creatures, is altered. As a result, it becomes unfamiliar to them, making it difficult for them to navigate and leave the house through these colored lights panels.
In Persian architecture, the Orosi is a vertical sliding sash window, usually equipped with stained glass that is painted in different geometric shapes and patterns. It was not only used to create natural barriers against insects but also to filter the sunlight falling on it so that a lovely and bright shade prevails inside the house, making the room comfortable and calm.
It is truly fascinating how the ancient Persian architects managed to combine both practicality and beauty in their stained glass windows.
