When I was on duty as part of the medical corps to assist the war wounded, I began to have visions of a terrible catastrophe that humanity was about to experience.
I informed my superiors and was immediately discharged: psychiatric condition of post-traumatic stress care.
I returned to my country with the firm intention of creating a rescue corps and setting up appropriate spaces with sufficient supplies for the survivors.
The government called me crazy and did not give me support.
Twenty years have passed since that episode.

Diary of a Survivor
U.S. Army Retired Major. Dr. Kelly.
Survivor Log

February 2035
It is getting dark again. It is the fourth week after the great cataclysm and still no sign of life.
Thanks to the knowledge acquired during my time as a scout and training received un the army I have been able to survive so far.

When I was in the army, I thought about the day I would be discharged. One more mission and I would have a normal life, but the Rescue Ground Rescue mission took longer than I would have liked.

The continents would move again as they did in previous eras. Perhaps a large meteorite would collapse the earth. I was not sure when this would happen.

Dr. Kelly

I set up the basement of my house as a bunker, with drinking water, food and medicine for a year. Electric plant, enough fuel, steel walls, oxygen. Everything I needed to wait a year for the atmosphere to clear.

Month 2

I hear no sound. I have not yet left the bunker. The acid rain and dust must be toxic. I have to wait for the right time and measure the oxygen quality.
So far I have managed to stay calm. I exercise, read, and write this journal to pass the time. I have come up with several novels, and when all this passes I am sure I will become a writer.

There is still no sign of life on the radio. That's strange to me.

Month 4
Today after 4 months locked up in the bunker I went out for a tour, to measure the quality of the oxygen and document the conditions in which the city was left.

There are no words to describe so much chaos and destruction. I found no survivors, and worse, the acid rain killed plants and animals. The toxic gases were lethal.

No human mind could have imagined such desolation after the cataclysm.
I must make the decision to go to Ávila Mountain, possibly there is some life left. I carry enough supplies and oxygen to make the exploration and return in a week.

Month 10
I have not written for a long time. There is no mountain left, everything is flat and deserted. Just dust.
Ten months have passed and I'm afraid I'm the only survivor. The acid rain has killed all the vegetation, life on the planet is unlikely. It will be many years before life on the planet begins again.
I just have to wait for death or better yet, to bring it about.

Month 15
Supplies are running low, I am sick. My lungs are collapsing. The oxygen in the bunker is running out.

I don't know what day it is anymore...I don't care either

The earthquakes continue, a shrill noise deafens me.
I look forward to death. This nightmare must end, my mission is over.

I document in my diary that I am the only survivor after the great cataclysm.
I leave an inventory of edible plants for the next humans to inhabit the earth.

I have waited long enough and I am going to inject the serum of eternal rest, but first my last bottle of wine reserved for this special moment.

I feel upset and sad, why me? I have never believed in God but at this moment I would like to get an answer, to know what is the point of being the only survivor of a cataclysm?

Lights are seen in the distance. It is a ship with the NASA symbol. They probably received the signal from my radio.
I hope that someday the human species can rise again, this time putting life at the center.

I know how to keep it alive...someone had to take care of the plants.
