Let's talk about Queen's Gambit / Hablemos de Gambit de Dama [EN/ES]
Gambito de Dama, is a Netflix original short series based on the game of chess. At first I thought it was about Gambit the superhero of the Marvel universe but female version.
What a surprise, Queen's Gambit is a move in chess.

The story is based on Elizabeth, or better known as Beth, a girl with a very difficult childhood, orphaned at a very young age in a suicide attempt by her mother crashing her car into another to kill them both, yet miraculously Beth survived. I think her mother was crazy or something, maybe she was abusing drugs, I couldn't see it clearly, but judging by the decisions she made and the physical appearance, I think both.
After her mother's death she was transferred to an orphanage for girls, she was very young, withdrawn, but very intelligent and brave. There she befriended a black girl who taught her certain tricks, including hiding the tranquilizer drugs they were given during the day, to use them at night to sleep better. Beth picked up this habit of stashing the pills and hoarding them so she could use them together and have a better trip.
She met in the basement of the orphanage the man who would be her teacher, Mr. Shaibel, as I said at the beginning, Beth was a very intelligent girl, and she learned chess very quickly, besides that at night when she consumed her tranquilizing drugs she would review moves looking at the ceiling of the room and having a kind of vision with the board and the pieces moving.
Time went by and the girl thought of nothing else but chess and her tranquilizer drugs, there was a time when tranquilizer drugs were forbidden and that affected her a lot. Mr. Shaibel introduced her to a well-known chess player and she obviously stood out, she was invited to the chess club to play with several men at the same time and she beat them all. This is how this girl spent her time in the orphanage, between chess, Mr. Chaibel, her black friend and tranquilizer drugs, until she became a 13 year old lady.
One day she was adopted by a couple who had no children but were relatively financially stable, I thought, but they were not. The couple adopted Beth to count on government welfare for adopting an orphan. However, the differences between the couple were at a point of no return and they separated, leaving Beth and her adoptive mother at home.
Beth began her regular studies while her adoptive mother was getting worse emotionally and financially every day. Everything improved dramatically when these two women made a strategic alliance and set out to hunt down every chess tournament in the city, the country and the world to win the cash prizes.
Beth managed to become world champion when she was very young, managing to beat the many times Soviet world champion, however it was not easy for her to achieve that goal, she had lost to him several times, I believe that the fact of being so dependent on drugs and alcohol was leading her to failure. In the end, when she stopped using them she was able to achieve her goals.
I'm summarizing a lot, there are many things that I'm not telling you and I'm intentionally overlooking because I really would like you to see it, I give it a 7/10, although the series has 7 episodes that could have been a 90min movie, it's worth it, with all the filler. It transports us to the '50s, the photography and setting are quite good, the acting is excellent, the beautiful Anya Taylor-Joy and her elegant pose throughout the filming, how the subject of women and chess as a sport is addressed but in a healthy way without going so deep (which would have been annoying), some social problems of the time, some emotional and mental problems from a certain perspective. I loved it and enjoyed it.
This is my review of Lady's Gambit, once again I hope you see it, I recommend it. 7/10.

Que sorpresa me llevé, Gambito de Dama es una jugada en el ajedrez
El gambito de dama es una apertura de ajedrez. Se caracteriza por los movimientos (en notación algebraica) siguientes:

TLa historia está basada sobre Elizabeth, o mejor conocida como Beth, una niña con una infancia muy difícil, huérfana a muy temprana edad en un intento de suicidio de su madre chocando el carro contra otro para morirse ambas, sin embargo milagrosamente Beth sobrevivió. Creo que su madre estaba loca o algo así, tal vez abusaba de drogas, no pude verlo con claridad, pero a juzgar por las decisiones que tomaba y el aspecto físico, creo que ambas cosas.
Luego de la muerte de su madre ella fue trasladada a un orfanato de chicas, era muy joven, retraída, pero muy inteligente y valiente. Allí se hizo amiga de una niña negra que le enseñó ciertos trucos, incluyendo el de esconder la droga tranquilizante que les daban en el día, para luego usarlas en las noches y dormir mejor. Beth tomó esta costumbre de guardar las pastillas y acumularlas para luego consumirlas juntas y tener un mejor viaje.
Conoció en el sótano del orfanato al que sería su maestro el Sr. Shaibel, como dije al principio, Beth era una niña muy inteligente, y aprendió muy rápidamente el ajedrez, además que en las noches al consumir sus drogas tranquilizantes repasaba jugadas mirando el techo de la habitación y teniendo una especie de visión con el tablero y las piezas moviéndose.
Así paso el tiempo y la niña no pensaba en otra cosa que el ajedrez y sus drogas tranquilizantes, hubo un tiempo que prohibieron las drogas tranquilizantes y eso le afectó muchísimo. El Sr. Shaibel le presentó a un conocido jugador de ajedrez y destacó obviamente, fue invitada al club de ajedrez a jugar con varios hombres a la vez y los venció a todos. Así pasaba el tiempo en el orfanato esta niña, entre el ajedrez, el Sr. Chaibel, su amiga negra y las drogas tranquilizantes, hasta convertirse en una señorita de 13 años.
Un día fue adoptada por una pareja que no tenía hijos pero eran relativamente estables económicamente, eso pensé, pero no era así. La pareja adoptó a Beth para contar con la ayuda social del gobierno por adoptar una huérfana. Sin embargo las diferencias entre estos esposos estaban a un punto de no retorno y se separaron, quedando en casa Beth y su madre adoptiva.
Beth empezó sus estudios regulares mientras su madre adoptiva cada día empeoraba emocionalmente y económicamente. Todo mejoró notablemente cuando estas dos mujeres hicieron una alianza estratégica y se dedicaron a cazar cuanto torneo de ajedrez en la ciudad, en el país y el mundo se estuviera ejecutando para ganar los premios en efectivo.
Beth logró ser campeona mundial siendo muy joven, logrando vencer al muchas veces campeón mundial soviético, sin embargo no le fue fácil lograr esa meta, había perdido contra él varias veces, creo que el hecho de depender tanto de las drogas y el alcohol la estaban llevando al fracaso. Al final cuando paró el uso de éstos pudo lograr sus objetivos.
Estoy resumiendo bastante, hay muchas cosas que no les estoy contando y estoy pasando por alto de manera intencional, porque de verdad me gustaría que la vieran, le doy un 7/10, a pesar de que la serie cuenta con 7 episodios que bien pudo ser una película de 90min, vale la pena, con todo y el relleno. Ésta nos transporta a esos años 50, la fotografía y ambientación están bastante bien, la actuación excelente, la hermosa Anya Taylor-Joy y su pose elegante durante todo el rodaje, como se aborda el tema de la mujer y el ajedrez como deporte pero de una manera sana sin profundizar tanto (cosa que hubiera sido molesto), algunos problemas sociales de la época, algunos problemas emocionales y mentales desde cierta perspectiva. Me ha encantado y la disfrute.
Esta es mi crítica sobre Gambito de Dama, una vez más espero que la vean, se las recomiendo. 7/10.
