This weekend we celebrated Christmas. I know it might be odd for some, but there are people who celebrate Christmas on 7th of January. Reason for this is very simple, we celebrate same Christmas, and it's on same day, but, our church use different calendar, and that is Julian. So Christmas is still on same date, but in Gregorian calendar it is 7th of January.
In this post I will share some customs and how our celebration went. First and probably one of the favorites customs of most people, is a bread - "cesnica". This bread is shared between family members, and inside of it there are some items. Once you get your piece, inside of it there can be a coin, yule log, corn or beans. I guess some people might use other items as well, but this is in my family. Everyone wants to get coin, because that means they will have money the next year. Corn and beans represent sheeps and pigs, and this means you will have them and raise them next year, which is not so popular nowdays. Yule log can represent happiness, success, health... In my home, since there are many of us, grandma makes sure everyone gets something and she divides bread in advance, and also puts enough items for everyone to get something. Also, she kinds of "cheat" and wait till we get yule log so that she decides what it represents in order to be most fitting for the person who got it :D
This year I got yule log, and my grandma said it represents growth and success.
Other specific thing for Christmas is a lot of food, of course. Everyone enjoy a lot of delicious food, specially if they have been fasting in the previous period. Main thing that most Christmas table has is roast meat and russian salad.
After breakfast, we went to my aunts place to help making cakes for upcoming family holiday. Day was sunny and warm, and this winter has been so weird, weatherwise. I took some photos at my aunts place, among them you can see her cat, Matilda.
For lunch, we went to the village to have it with my other grandparents. This time I got corn in my piece of bread. I took some photos there as well, like the rose that is yet to open, and Medo (dog) and Marko (cat) who is almost bigger then Medo now.
It was also the day of the first full moon in 2023 and I took photo of it, even though tree was in the way.
This is just a little bit about how I spent my Christmas with family.
