101 Life Lessons by Humble the Poet

Personally, reading this book was out of my comfort zone since I am not used to reading heavily inspirational based books. I decided to challenge myself and still finish this review even after procrastinating a bit. I have decided to leave a full list of the books I own at the end of this review so you can select which one I should review next.

Authors Background

Lets first understand the author and how this book connects to his life. Humble the Poet aka Kanwer Singh was previously an elementary school teacher who decided to leave his job and pursue various forms of creativity by becoming an author, hip-hop artist, designer, and film maker. This book includes personal stories of Kanwer's struggles with his religious family, job, friendships, money, freedom, looks and racism.

I have picked out 5 out of 101 lessons to dive deep into:

Ask for help even if it is scary
Survive on the Inside
Recognize stupidity
Wait 24 hours before making decisions out of heightened emotions
Recognize difference between commitment and involvement

Lessons in Detail

The first lesson is about Humbles journey to crowdfund his book which required $23K. At first, he was hesitant to ask for help but faced rejections from long term friends but received help from strangers on social media which taught him the lesson: ask for help even if it is scary because we don’t know who is paying attention.

The second lesson provides insight about why Humble left his previous job: it did not fuel his inner creativity. He decided to quit his job and pursue artistic opportunities to feed his soul.

The third lesson (and my personal favourite) is about recognizing human tendencies to receive short-term gratification with lack of foresight about long term consequences.

The fourth lesson might be something which we have all experienced. Imagine dealing with someone who got under your skin to the point where you want to confront them immediately. Humble recommends waiting 24 hours as a courtesy to yourself to think your decision through. Remember once you say it in the open, it is hard to take it back.

The last lesson is something we need to hear occasionally. Being involved vs committed to something are not the same thing. Humble mentioned that he felt more committed and driven to pursue artistic endeavours instead of staying involved with his teaching job. Being involved skims the surface, being committed has roots deep within.

My Thoughts

Personally, I liked the fact that this book was not just a list of 101 lessons but instead it provided some insight about the author’s life. This made the book more personal. I found some slight repetition between some lessons and felt like it could have been combined. Overall, this book will suit someone who is either interested in learning more about Humble the Poet or enjoys acquiring new lessons based on other people's story.
