Hello Hive
Our fresh groundnuts are already ripe and ready for consumption. For my groundnut lovers, you can start coming over for some. I have some few hive friends who live closer and who usually come to eat some fresh groundnuts whenever harvest comes around like this.
Finally the days are upon us and we have gradually begun the harvest of our groundnut. Having begun the work gradually, groundnut harvest is a very slow and gradual process. Most times we invite a good number of people to assist us with the harvest.
The process is a very simple one in which we start by going through the lines of the planted nuts one after the other and pulling up the plants. When we are done with that, we them move gather the plants into piles in different locations in the farm.
From here we now sit down and begin to pluck the nuts from the leaves one after the other. Meanwhile we would have purchases and prepared bags down that will be used to transport the nuts home.
When the days work is completed, the groundnuts that are harvested will then be transported home for preservation.
Preservation is usually done before storage as nuts often contains a lot of moisture content. They can get spoilt within few days if they are not attended to. The preservation or drying phase is usually the longest aspect of the harvest as we have to keep drying day for about 3weeks depending on the intensity of the sun.
The nut inside is usually white during harvest but after sun drying they normally turn deep brown. We have learnt how to watch out for these to dry properly and how to know if they are sufficiently dried. If the nuts within aren't sufficiently dried the groundnuts can still go bad during storage.
