It's another beautiful morning in the land of the living and as much as I love to visit the farm very early, I also dislike getting up at dawn, I had a about 5hrs of sleep and still feel like they are not enough, how much our bodies love go rest and rest and rest.
Whenever it is a farming session like this we get very very busy. This is more because we are not planting a single crop but varieties of species, a little if all the food types we eat, this is the reason why we can remain busy throughout the farming session with no rest. While you are busy planting groundnuts, the corn field might just be needing your attention for you to come do weeding on it.
There were times when I have asked my father to let go of certain crops and only plant some but we soon realized that once you let go of some crops, they cease to exist in the market. Crops like bambaranuts here are already going into extinction. Not many people are involved in growing all these crops, the present generation do not eat the available varieties of our local foods, most have now adapted to eating junks, snacks, noodles and rice. Our aged parents still prefer our local meals to all those junks maybe that is the reason that some crops still exist as the older farmers still grow them.
And this situation is also thesame with meat, people only prefer chicken, beef or fish to some local meats. A good number of the older geratation still eat pork and chevon(goat meat).
I totally understand why eaten rodents is now more restricted than before, they are now carriers if deadly diseases and it is good to stay on a safer side while in the search of meat or food.
In this community rabbits like these now sells in the market as a good source of meat. I have never tasted rabbit meat but the day my sister told me that she did I felt a little uneasy about it.
Rabbits looks more like pets to me just like some people love cats, I can't handle cats but rabbits are now becoming more like my favorites.
These new born kittens are so cute and playful now, at about a month old they feed on virtually everything we give them.
They are just too playful making it difficult to capture their photos together, about 4 of them were born and they are still alive and growing up together.
Now that they feed on almost anything from grasses to vegetables, potatoes and all of our kitchen waste, you will see just how cheap it is to grow rabbit as a farm animal. It is much less expensive than chicken or birds generally, but since more people consume more of chicken, you have to grow what is in demand at the market if you are looking forward to a profitable side of growing farm animals. Chicken, Turkey and Eggs are currently the highest in demand.
To make a business from growing rabbits, the mother above can have babies as many as 6 times before the year ends. They can get pregnant again almost as at when the give birth to their babies(this is if they mate instantly) but it is advisable to not stress her by giving her at least a month of rest after every birth, from that timing she can be made to mate again in preparation for another set of babies. This way as soon as she weans the first set of babies at 2months, another set will be ready to be born.
Although this one has giving birth to just 4babies for her first birth, we look forward to how much this will be enlarged before the year runs out.
