I wrote this poem for Grace when she was being honored for her devoted service in the UMC. She was my next door neighbor and good friend for nearly a decade. She moved recently out of state. I miss my friend.

What’s in a name –
          A name like Grace?

In that name, a friend –
          a ready smiling face.

Grace, that boon companion,
          always the good neighbor,

A count’nance of serenity,
          an always open door

The Lord, like a halo ‘bout her,
‘pon her lips, a ready prayer

Your woes she’ll lift in aid,
          and holy compassion share

A kind and helpful word
          to guide my growing child.

To help him along his way,
          advise him ‘gainst the wild.

A word or two of kindness,
and, yes, some few of praise…

Grace that true and valued friend
with whom God blessed my days
