Y ella rompió a llorar.

No tenía.

‎

A days ago, I posted on Liketu that on September 29, my girlfriend anne002@anne002 and I celebrated the one-year anniversary of our engagement; and in that post, I showed off the gift she gave me.

‎You can read the story on Liketu 👉 here

‎
‎It feels special to share this occasion in this way because, as of the date of this article (October 2026), our society and its moral values have changed so much in both form and substance that a “engagement” is a rare thing.
‎But in our case, we voluntarily chose to do it this way out of conviction. I could go into more detail, but that’s not the purpose of this post.
‎
That day, I surprised her with an impromptu dinner to which I invited a few close friends so they could share in the memory of the occasion. They were all in on the secret. But anne002@anne002 had no idea.
‎That night, after dinner, I spoke up to reveal the whole plan, and that’s when I handed her a sort of pop-up card—but with a few modifications, including a little box containing a ring alongside an artificial black rose, her favorites.
‎
‎Then, at my signal, one of the guests placed the cake on the table with the question “Will you marry me?” And she burst into tears. Moments later, she said yes. An exceptional surprise on a unique occasion and under unique circumstances. Something simple—admittedly, without much fanfare—but special.

(These are some of the photos from September of last year. First, our friends; then our parents; and finally, next to the cake and the engagement gift, after I gave her the ring.)

A year after that moment and just a few months before celebrating (soon) our wedding, last Monday we decided to relive that memory. So, for my part, I got to work making her a simple but meaningful gift for both of us.

Join me as I walk you through the process.
‎
‎THE DOLL

‎I have to start by saying that one of her greatest passions is collecting ceramic figurines. Some time ago, I explored various options and places until I found an original limited edition of six pieces (of which I’ve already given her three), and I just acquired this one from the same series.

THE SNACK

Her favorite fruit is guava, in any form: as a whole fruit, in juice, jam, snacks.... So I bought two of the latter (the biggest ones I could find at the market). To add a personal touch, I cut out a paper sticker and wrote a very personal note next to it, then covered the sandwiches with the note and the sticker and finished it off with a white yarn tie.
‎
‎At the end of this post, among the last three images, you can see how the presentation turned out.

THE DESSERT

‎At this point, I should mention that a few months ago, during one of my visits to her house, while we were chatting about this and that, I mentioned an eggplant dessert to her.
‎
‎She immediately frowned with a puzzled expression. She didn’t know what it was. In fact, according to her, she’d never even tasted it.
‎
‎“Oh, really? Well, you’ll try it for the first time with me,” I thought.

‎That same week, I bought eggplant and sugar. Shortly afterward, I came back and showed her the result. She couldn’t help but look at it with some suspicion. She grabbed the container, held it up to her nose, sniffed it as if searching for harmful or deadly substances (🤣🤣🤣), and after turning it over and over in her hands, she finally put a tiny piece in her mouth as carefully as if it were glass.
‎
‎It didn’t take long for her face to show immense satisfaction at the explosion of flavor in her mouth. Ever since then, eggplant dessert has been one of my special treats to give him.
‎
‎So, I couldn’t miss out this time.
‎
‎I took 4 large eggplants and, while rinsing them, pricked them several times with a fork as I let them soak up water. Then I kept squeezing them to force them to rinse out from the inside and get rid of a dark pigment that, otherwise, leaves the final dish with a slightly sour aftertaste that makes your mouth pucker a little when you eat it.
‎
‎Next, I put them to boil in one liter of water and 700 grams of sugar.

After 30–40 minutes, when almost all the water had boiled away, the vegetables absorbed the molasses and blended evenly into the syrup. I didn’t add any cloves. I didn’t have any. But I substituted a pinch of ground cinnamon instead.
‎

‎TIP: This is something I do. I added a teaspoon of vanilla after turning off the heat. It’s not a rule, but I’ve noticed that it gives it an explosive and pleasant finishing touch.

Plus, the flavor really comes out as the syrup ages over the course of several days in the refrigerator.
‎
‎
But since nothing is perfect in this world, I was in for a surprise when I checked the finished syrup.

It turns out I hadn’t noticed that the eggplants had passed the optimal stage for using them this way, and the seeds had already ripened. So when the insides opened up in the syrup, they ended up looking like this.
‎I almost had a heart attack when I saw it. It looked absolutely awful. But it wasn’t worth throwing it away after all the love I’d put into it. So I started thinking. And since I’m stronger than hate, after going round and round in my head… Bam!
‎
‎
‎I found the solution 💡

I took a stainless steel strainer, poured the whole mixture into it, and started pressing it through with a wooden spoon until the usable part passed through the strainer and all the seeds were trapped inside.

Finally, I poured part of the mixture into two plastic containers, covered them with plastic wrap, secured it with white yarn, and put them in the refrigerator.

THE BLACK ROSE

This is another incredibly special gift for anne002@anne002. She absolutely loves it. Of all the floral gifts, black roses and sunflowers are her favorites. But a natural black rose is very hard to come by on this side of the world. They do exist, but in Turkey—in the province of Halfeti. It’s the only place in the world where they’re grown.
‎
‎Can’t I get a black rose for her? 🤨 Who says so? 🧐
‎
‎“Nothing is impossible for God” 😅 So I put the creativity He gave me to work. I bought some black ribbon, got a skewer or barbecue stick, green crepe paper, and craft silicone.

And this is how it turned out... ☺️

‎Come to think of it, I just forgot to add little leaves to the stem, right? But I already gave it to her 😅
‎
‎To top it off, I added some other decorative touches along with a photo of us ☺️

And that’s it.

The finished gift with all the pieces together. In the back is the little ceramic doll. In the front and on the left are the two containers of eggplant jam, wrapped the same way as the guava snacks on the right. In the center, the little black rose.
‎
‎

‎
And ‎that’s how I handed it to him. 😎
‎
‎

‎
‎
‎I’m really happy to be able to share this moment in my life with you all. I don’t usually post meaningless content, so when I do post something, I make sure it’s worth reading. Even though this means a lot to me, I didn’t want to keep this joy all to myself.
