It was a hot Sunday afternoon, it was a hot Sunday afternoon, summer almost upon us. the sun shone brightly in the sky and even though it was only June, everyone in the house was sweating profusely.
I decided to go shopping somewhere on Bulivad street to get some ingredients to make the perfect chilled lemonade drink. on my arrival at the shopping complex, I realized that the shops were closed. which meant I won't be able to buy the groceries I need to make my icy beverage.
I roamed about for a few seconds before I then decided to head out to the old man Jinkies store, it was the only solution I could think of. The only problem with this solution was that he lived way deep in the trenches.
Where only the braveheart dares to go. But I wasn't going to let anything get between me and my cold beverage.
So I began my journey into the trenches.
Finally arriving at the trenches I made my way to old man Jinkies, but I needed directions. So I decided to ask about it.
I took a deep breath and knocked on a door, as I waited for an answer from inside. a woman's voice shouted "come in" before the door opened.
she had long black hair, and she wore glasses but they are too big for her face. she looked up at me with curious eyes and said
"what can I do for you, sir?".
"um hello, I was wondering if you could help me."
she gave me her attention
"yes, I'm looking for someone who lives around here. His name is old man Jinkies"
"well I'm sorry, I don't know anyone like that so-" she paused and seemed to think "oh! wait!"
she ran down the steps and came back with a small piece of paper "here is his address"
thanking her profusely, I grabbed the piece of paper from her hands and ran off.
I arrived there quickly and rang the bell. after some time, a young boy opened the front door and when he noticed me standing there, he asked me what I wanted
"umm... Hello, may I speak to Jinkies?"
he seemed to be confused by that question
"no no I'm looking for Jinkies". I added "JINKIES?" again in hopes of him getting it right this time.
the kid scratched his neck and said "I don't know where he is... He should be home soon, you could stay for a while or I could help you find what you're looking for."
"that would be great" I agreed.
In the shop, the boy helped around so I was able to find what I was looking for. And I proceeded to pay. While I was paying I noticed the boy kept eyeing my wallet. I stopped to ask if there was a problem he smiled and said no.
So I put the wallet back in my pocket and made my way outside after paying.
Halfway to the bus stop, I heard someone calling out sir! Sir!.
I turned around to see, and to my surprise, it was the little boy. And he was waving something in the air, at a closer look, I came to realize that it was my wallet.
I was shocked and confused as he handed it over to me, "you left this on the floor." He said with a big smile.
I thanked him again and went on my way quickly. The trenches is not a place you want to be.
Back at home, I proceeded to check all I had purchased and how much change was left. I began to check and balance everything. Until finally I noticed something...
My wallet was empty!.. I should have had up to a hundred dollars worth of change left. But there was nothing in it except for a folded piece of paper.
I took out the paper, I unfolded it, and there it was boldly written, welcome to the trenches
It was at that moment, that I realized....I had been scammed!.
