That amplification is a big thing. Y'know how people say everyone is capable of doing horrible things in the right circumstances/enough money/whatever - I strongly believe this. It's already in us, innate.
We aren't born empty canvases, we're born savages. We've miraculously got ourselves out with society and all its tools (tradition, culture, family, farming). If that starts to break down, we're not creating any evil in response, we're just bringing it back to the surface. It never left.
Some people allow it out at weird times, like glorifying the death of an old man president (soon, you'll see the republicans do similar glorification as democrats when it's announced Biden's dead). Social media certainly aids in that.
The second the algorithm sees even a subtle hint of you liking cats because you accidentally stayed on a cat video 1.2 seconds longer than usual, it knows, and it'll feed on it. Same goes for any other interest no matter how subconscious. We're like donkeys with a carrot being hung just out of reach by California lol
