White-winged Crossbill

I have only encountered a flock of these birds a small handful of times. They are known to travel together and can move across great distances all across Canada. I feel privileged when they choose the spruce trees on my front lawn to make a pit stop. They will be there for maybe an hour or two, gathering up whatever food they can forage. Their beaks are made for prying open spruce cones to get at the seeds. An abundance of these cones lying on the grass is what must have attracted them for a visit.
