This type of prompts is the one that always gets people talking.
Some may say jollof rice, some swear by pounded yam and others pizza. But every single time I'm asked, my answer remains "Beans". Yes. The humble meal most people overlook.
For me, if love could be served in a plate, then mine would be steaming bowl of beans.
Nothing gives me the same feeling a well cooked plate of beans does. To me, it's more than just a food.
Growing up, beans was a regular quest in our home. Back then I didn't always appreciate it. Like many children, I sometimes complained because I wanted something more exciting. I never imagined there would be a day when I'd actually crave the same meal I always complained about.
Now, things are different, whenever I eat a plate of soft, well seasoned beans cooked with onions, pepper, enough crayfish and palm oil, I feel completely satisfied.
Pair it with fried ripe plantain, oh! you have won my heart.
Sometimes I enjoy it with garri, fresh bread or yam. Each combination has its own unique taste and I can't even pick a favorite.
One thing I love about beans is that it feels the stomach and heart, and very simple to prepare.
You don't need any expensive ingredients to make it delicious. Just with the right seasoning, you can make a pot of delicious beans.
Another reason i will always be loyal to beans is that it is versatile. You can turn it from beans porridge to moi moi and akara. One ingredient can be turned into different dishes. It's affordable, nutritious and give satisfaction when prepared well.
If I ever had to choose one meal over and over again, I wouldn't even need to think about it. I will choose beans over and over. It has been there through different stages of my life and is on a permanent deal.
