I had a flashback immediately I saw this prompt because it's relatable to me.
One of my father's favorite words is " A patient dog eat the fattest bone" and whenever he says it, I never thought deeply about it. Like many people, I have always believed that if things doesn't happen quickly, it probably wasn't meant to happen.
But then, my elder sister's journey opened my eyes.
While many of her mates and friends got married earlier, she remained single for years. On few occasions I overheard people whispering why she wasn't still married. And to be honest, it bothered me too. It wasn't easy to watch and I know it wasn't easy for her too.
But one thing i realized was she never allowed that to bother her or even allow the pressure to push her into wrong relationship. She choosed to wait.
Eventually she met the right person and got married. Today she is happily married , while some of the people who murmured about her being single have gone through painful divorces. Seeing that completely changed my perspective.
That experience gave real meaning to that my father's favorite word. It taught me that waiting isn't a sign of failure. Sometimes patience is what protects us from making decisions we would regret later.
So do I believe that people learn more from advice or from their own mistakes? I think advice is valuable, but it becomes even more powerful when life give us real example.
My sister's story is the one I will never forget, it really taught me that patience is a great virtue. And that it is better to wait for what's right than to rush into something simply because everyone else is doing it.
Today whenever I feel pressured to compare my journey with someone's else, I remember her.
