I didn't set out to write about counterfeiting. I set out to understand how a man could print an estimated $250 million in fake U.S. currency and then walk out of the whole thing six weeks later, having paid a reported $1,300.
That man was Frank Bourassa, a Canadian, arrested in May 2012. Canadian police were involved. So was the U.S. Secret Service. You'd expect a case of that size to end with a very long sentence and a very large forfeiture. It didn't.
I spent a long time on that gap. Not the headline number—that part is easy to report. The part that took work was everything underneath it: how the investigation actually unfolded, what was on the table during the negotiations, and why the resolution came out the way it did. There were points where I had to go back and re-read documents because the sequence didn't sit right the first time.
The result is The Perfect Twenty: He Outplayed Two Countries and Bargained His Way Free. It's the story of the operation, the people chasing it, and the deal that closed it out.
