Society tells us the things we do should be effortless, and being obsessive is not cool at all. But why is being obsessive a bad thing?
This is a question I've been pondering for some time. I’m the kind of person that goes all in when I find something I like. In high school, I was obsessed with basketball and did nothing but that for four years. In college my basketball obsession waned until I found rock climbing, which I became obsessed with for several years. When I graduated college the people I climbed with moved away so my obsession with climbing faded. At that point I discovered Rugby which quickly became my newest obsession. That didn’t last long as my back gave out, but I was lucky to fall back into golfing (something I hadn’t played much since middle school). Nowadays, I am obsessed with building wealth to escape the 9-5 grind and be able to live the life I want and provide for my family worry-free.
The key for me with all of these obsessions was that being so passionate about what I was doing made me so much better at them. I would never have played basketball in college if I wasn’t obsessed with it in high school. I would have never become a sub-bogey golfer if I wasn’t obsessed with golfing. And while nothing is guaranteed, at this point in my life I am so much closer to achieving financial freedom than so many of my friends because I am so obsessed with growing personal wealth.
To me obsession is normal. It is in my DNA. I am just wired to go full bore into whatever I am obsessed with at that time. Society however, tries to convince us that being obsessed or putting maximum effort into something isn’t cool. We’re supposed to do as little as possible but still have the maximum amount of achievements. I always hear things like, “oh, I just gave it a shot and things worked out” or, “I didn’t really try and things just happened.” But let’s be real, how often are people just handed things like a great job, a new house or car, a dream vacation. ALMOST NEVER!!! To achieve lofty goals in this world takes a ton of hard work and dedication!
Let’s take sports for example, how many people think Ronaldo, Michael Jordan, or Tom Brady just woke up and were the best in their sports…that’s right, none of us. We know they worked their butts off and obsessed over their craft to achieve the greatness they did. So why do we allow society to tell us that being obsessive about your goals and trying your hardest isn’t the right thing to do? Why is “just waking up” and going about your life without pursuing greatness acceptable? For me these things just don’t make sense. I am a driven person and to achieve my goals I am going to do everything possible and be obsessive over every detail. In my mind, that is how you improve yourself and achieve your goals. I’m not going to leave anything up to chance. Let me know what you’re obsessive over in the comments; I love to hear what others are working on.
