Joseph and Abigail's eyes met, their hearts recognized each other at once, 40 years had passed since Joseph had helped her flee to Sweden from Denmark during the German occupation in the 1940s.
They both grew up in Denmark, their parents were Jewish, so their families were happy that these young people were engaged, there was a wonderful party full of family and friends to celebrate the engagement.
That night was full of laughter, food and wine, it was a night full of happiness. The bride and groom did not leave each other's side, their eyes sparkled, and they could not stop smiling. It was a happy night.
By this time the German invasion of Denmark had already taken place, but there was no resistance from the Danish country, so the residents went on with their normal lives.
However, in those days, rumors began to spread that the Germans were going to imprison the Jews as they had already done in other countries, and panic was aroused in the community.
It was the year 1943, Joseph decided to join the resistance, he felt a moral duty to do so, Abigail also wanted to do so, they were brave and impetuous young people, but she began to feel sick and that worried him. Then, with the friends of the resistance they planned the escape of their relatives.
They went by night to a fishing village, Port of Gilleleje, and Abigail, along with other family members, crossed over by boat to Sweden.
Joseph stayed in Denmark with his father and brother, they were his only family, his mother had been dead for many years. On the other hand, Abigail went with her parents, she was an only daughter, and they were very old.
While in Sweden, Abigail discovered that she was pregnant, which filled her with both hope and fear.
Two years passed, and the war ended, Joseph sailed to Sweden to look for Abigail, by that time her firstborn was born, she named him David.
It took Joseph a while to find her, she was in Malmö in a Jewish village, and he managed to see her in the distance, so he ran towards her until he saw her with a small child, that stopped him immediately, and he thought that she had made her life, so he didn't want to return to Denmark but went to Stockholm where he lived for many years.
Shortly after the war ended, Abigail's parents died; So, she decided to return to Denmark in the hope of meeting Joseph.
Abigail returned to what was her home, and like many other Jews they resumed their lives in Denmark, but she did not meet Joseph again, and despite asking many of her acquaintances about him, no one knew of his whereabouts.
Years passed, Abigail only lived to raise her son and never remarried, deep down she hoped to see Joseph again...
For his part, Joseph lived with Ana, a Jewish woman who had settled in Stockholm, where they met, and had three children: Jacob, Isaac and Esther. Ana became seriously ill and died when her children were still teenagers, but time has passed and each of his children formed their family...
One day Joseph woke up with the overwhelming desire to travel to Denmark, to visit Copenhagen, the city where he grew up, so he prepared to go on vacation to his hometown, and that's where it happened...
Visiting the Old Town of the city, in the town hall square, he felt enraptured by a contagious laugh that moved him to what he called: a happy night. Joseph was looking at a beautiful woman with her back to him, and as he sought to see her face, his heart was beating fast... He just thought: it's her, I know it's her, my beloved Abigail.
Abigail finally turned around, and when she saw him she recognized him right away, without hesitation she approached, and they hugged in silence, the tears expressed what could not be said with words, and a new chapter in their love story began.
