Rybinsk is not a particularly large city in the Yaroslavl region. Here, before the revolution, they fished for the royal court, the founder of the Nobel Prize did business here, even Hollywood figures were born here. Here you can see spectacular structures: hydroelectric power station locks and the Mother River monument. Here you can walk along the street, which looks like a movie set, here you will see funny signs with the pre-revolutionary alphabet.
My friends and I sometimes arrange weekends in the style of a “one-night stand”: we leave problems at home, get in the car and drive to one of the cities near our region for a couple of days. This time our choice fell on this beautiful city.
What can I say, the city exceeded our expectations. There are almost no new buildings in the center, mostly low-rise buildings from the 19th century period. Extensive collections of historical museums will let you know that a lot of interesting events have happened here. Our guide told us how the residents of one apartment found images of saints under a layer of wallpaper and realized that they were living in a former chapel.
The city stands on two large rivers. Therefore, at all times, fishing was strong here. Two sterlets are drawn on the coat of arms of the city.
Until the revolution, the city was the largest center of grain trade, there was a grain exchange. Merchants manipulated the price of bread, made deals worth millions here, including deals with foreigners. Contracts for the whole season were concluded here, and a lot of money was drunk in numerous taverns and restaurants.
Guides tell a lot about the Nobel family, who owned shipyards and oil storage facilities in the city. The Nobel brothers produced diesel engines and built an oil pipeline.
Filmmakers love to shoot films here. At the end of the 19th century, the brothers Joseph and Nikolai Sheinker were born here, whom the world knows as Joe and Nicholas Shenkov, the founders of the 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film companies.
The visiting card of the city is numerous cafes and restaurants that are open until late. All establishments are focused not only on tourists, but also on locals. Moreover, the cuisine and service there are quite metropolitan, and the prices are provincial.
The city is not only well-groomed, but also very beautiful. Both individual buildings and panoramas look impressive.
When it was time to say goodbye to the city, it was the case when you realize that you seem to have seen everything basic, but you really don’t want to leave. I have every reason to believe that this city will impress any guest
