On Sunday, I realized that I’ve developed the habit of questioning almost everything.
In many ways, that’s a good thing. It keeps me from being tossed to and fro by every idea that comes my way. But there’s also a downside. Sometimes, even when I already know what ought to be done, I still feel the urge to analyze it, build theories around it, and question it all over again.
On Sunday, my pastor said, “You can’t do anything without God.”
For a moment, I thought, What about people who seem to achieve so much without acknowledging God?
Then it dawned on me.
Whether or not we acknowledge God does not diminish His sovereignty. He remains God regardless of what anyone believes about Him.
The very fact that people wake up each day, breathe, think, work, create, and succeed is evidence of His sustaining power. Existence itself is a gift from Him.
Without God, there would be no existence. Without existence, there would be no success or failure, no pride or humility, no dreams or disappointments, nothing at all.
In that sense, no one truly does anything apart from God, because every human ability and every moment of life ultimately rests upon His grace.
For Christians, however, this reality goes even deeper. We do not merely acknowledge that God exists; we know Him, believe in Him, and willingly submit our lives to Him.
That relationship changes everything.
We are called to reflect His nature, to live according to His purpose, and to bear fruit that glorifies Him. We are not called to settle for spiritual mediocrity but to grow into the fullness of what He created us to be.
Perhaps that is the deeper meaning of Jesus’ words:
“Apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
Not because people cannot accomplish earthly things without consciously following Him, but because every breath, every ability, and every lasting purpose ultimately finds its source in God.
