"it is the responsibility of the oppressed to fight to achieve and maintain the necessary checks and balances to prevent them from continuing to do so."

This makes me think of the idea we often see in stories/movies of that ongoing fight between good and evil. Evil may always rise and fall with each battle, but it is when we stop fighting that it will completely take over.

Sometimes I think (or hope) that we get closer to that with each generation, but then I see how quickly we regress when times get hard or see those with power who view themselves as superior.
