Religion has always been useful in that way. When scary things are happening, people feel like they need to try and do something to defend themselves from danger. I guess that's what all these rules are doing, giving people something to do that makes them feel like they're protecting themselves. Unfortunately, some are more afraid of losses of freedom than the virus, so it's only making them more afraid.
