This is my response to the tribesteemup@tribesteemup biweekly question.

What makes you into the person you are today, is it all destiny or do we play a hand in shaping who we are?

When I look back on my past, there are many things I could resent. I could blame people and events for the bad things that have happened in my life and take no responsibility for anything else that might happen. After all, this person or that event has already ruined my life, have they not?

Every experience, good or bad, impacts your life and that's a given. How it impacts your life is more up to you, however. Negative experiences happen to us all. Some people will take that negative and add to it, growing more and more resentful and bitter. Others will acknowledge it, then draw positive outcomes from it.

Each of our decisions and experiences in life have brought us to where we are today. We learn from them and grow from them. Sometimes any experience which may not have been great, can be the place where you learn about something that you come to love. A bad relationship can lead introducing you to a friend for life who you may never have met had you not gotten into the situation you were in. Failure of adults to protect you as a child could lead to you learning a hard lesson on how to fend for yourself, making you into a strong and capable adult while others are still struggling at a similar point in life.

When we look back on life, a pattern can be seen which is rather like fate or destiny. If one event hadn't happened then would you have met a certain person, heard about a certain job or gone to a certain place? You might get frustrated about a certain decision, which you feel was a bad one in hindsight. Yet had you not made that decision, would you still have learnt that it was a bad one? Would you have merely just delayed that mistake if you had made a different decision? What else did you learn from it?

I believe that we most certainly have a hand in who we are, in the way we choose to let our life experiences define us. Someone who is abused could choose to go on tonbe an abuser themselves or they could choose not to do the very thing that made them feel so bad at the time. They could even choose to be a campaigner to try and help prevent that sort of thing happening to others or to support other abuse survivors.

I also believe that destiny plays a part in who we are too. We are the product of genetics and we are steered by experiences. Sometimes, when a decision is hard to make or you don't have full control over an outcome in something, it can actually be easier to just do you best and then leave things in the hands of destiny. We will end up where we end up and merely need to trust in ourselves that we can handle what will come.
