I first became interested in Aquaponics after coming across an article by Dr. Nate Storey sometime back in 2013.
For my fellow Steemians that are unfamiliar with with aquaponics, it is a food production system that is a bilateral relationship between grow beds and fish tanks. It is an economical and self sustaining way to grow your own fresh produce as it is getting harder and harder to find heirloom seeds that haven't been genetically modified to be sterile after the plant reaches maturity.
Dr. Store has a PhD in Agronomy from the University of Wyoming and pioneered a method of growing crops vertically, indoors, using IBC containers, like these
The system can be set up indoors and can be done on a variable budget, depending on your location and the availability of materials needed. My father, brother, and myself put together a 3-container system linked together with 2 inch pvc pipe and 2 aquarium pumps.
Your grow beds are made by cutting the tops off the IBC containers and flipping them upside down
I purchased a package from a website www.backyardliberty.com that was about the price of a hardcover book, and provides a complete video tutorial that Dr. Nate Storey did himself on how to build a simple system from scratch.
The taller, bottom part of the container becomes your fish tank. The entire system is a continuous loop where the fish waste is pumped up to the top grow beds and the waste is taken into the plant roots as fertilizer food, which in turn cleanses the water for the fish which is gravity fed into a swirling tank and then drained back into the fish tanks.
Now, my system looks pretty ratty by comparison but it's functional and it's producing...
Got a nice crop of spinach coming up
The dollar is going to collapse folks...mathematically it cannot be sustained
